World Changing Glasgow

The University of Glasgow’s students and researchers have been changing the world since 1451. From Adam Smith, James Watt, Lord Kelvin to today’s ‘world-changers’ working on some of the most exciting discoveries of our time, the University of Glasgow is a place where ambitious people can succeed regardless of background or circumstance.

The University was named Scottish University of the Year 2024, by The Times & Sunday Times and has been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for the sixth time. We are a world top 100 university for the sixth year in a row and a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK research universities.

The University of Glasgow is a university for the world. Working in partnership with other institutions across the globe to advance solutions to real world problems. We are proud to be a founding member of the university networks Universitas 21 and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities and as an associate member of CIVIS, a European Civic University alliance.

We are committed to tackling the most pressing global challenges facing humanity and the natural world. We are delivering against the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are ranked in the top 20 universities in the QS World Sustainability Rankings. We have pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030 and were the first European university to declare it would divest from fossil fuels by 2024, and were fully divested by September 2023.

We believe that everyone should have fair access to education. We are proud of our long tradition of helping talented people to fulfil their ambitions, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our University of Sanctuary status recognises the safe and welcoming environment we provide for refugees and asylum seekers.

The University of Glasgow is a world-renowned institution with a rich history of academic excellence dating back to 1451. A QS global top 80 university, Glasgow is a place where world-changing research meets transformative teaching, where bold ideas flourish, and where talented people are empowered to realise their ambitions. Our academic and financial foundations are strong, and our aspirations are global.  We are now looking to appoint a new Senior Vice-Principal & Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic, who will be integral to the development and delivery of our new strategy, and to the realisation of our aims and ambitions more generally. Reporting directly to Glasgow's Principal & Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andy Schofield, the Senior Vice-Principal is a key member of the University’s Senior Management Group. The role actively supports the Principal in the overall leadership and direction of the University and deputises in their absence.  The postholder will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan, and accountable for providing effective oversight and management of institutional resource planning aligned with and in support of the University’s strategic vision. Candidates should bring a distinguished academic profile and a proven record of strategic leadership, most likely from within a high performing research-intensive university. Demonstrable change leadership capability in a complex environment alongside the ability to lead and inspire high-performing teams will be important attributes, as will be a track record of managing significant resources. Candidates will possess strong governance experience, and the interpersonal, communication and influencing skills needed to build trust and deliver impact with myriad internal and external stakeholders. Integrity, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative leadership style will be essential.
