About the University of Florida

Basic information and contact details for the University of Florida

The University of Florida can trace its origins back to the very start of publicly funded higher education in the state. In 1853, shortly after Governor Thomas Brown passed a bill offering financial support, a man called Gilbert Kingsbury opened the East Florida Seminary. This eventually merged with the former Florida Agricultural College, the St Petersburg Normal and Industrial School and the South Florida Military College in 1905 to become the new University of the State of Florida. The relevant legislation was known as the Buckman Act and its originator, Henry Holland Buckman, is honoured in the university’s Buckman Hall.   

Major developments soon followed. In 1906, the Florida Museum of Natural History was incorporated into UF. As well as being invaluable for teaching and research, this represented a commitment to the study of biological diversity still significant almost a century later in 2000, when the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity was established as one of the largest collections of butterflies and moths in the world. In 1909, president Albert Murphree reorganised the separate colleges under a single mission and greatly expanded the size of the institution, with an annual intake rising from 200 to over 2,000.

Major developments in the 20th century include the creation of the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing in 1956 and a teaching hospital two years later. By building on these, UF is now the only university in the country which incorporates six different healthcare colleges on a single campus. A different landmark was reached in 1968, when the first ever “Gator” took part in the Olympics.

Since the millennium, the university has remained at the forefront of research in many areas, often through high-profile international collaborations. In 2002, it led a consortium of seven universities which secured a $15 million grant from NASA to carry out space research. From 2008, a partnership with Zhejiang University in China worked on sustainable energy. In 2012, over 30 UF physicists, postdocs and students played a leading part in the team whose experiments at the Large Hadron Collider established that the elusive Higgs boson really existed. The university continues to work with Spain on the world’s largest single-aperture optical telescope.

In 2014, the total number of students who had graduated from UF reached half a million. Notable alumni include actress Faye Dunaway, astronaut Kevin Ford and senior senator of Florida Marco Rubio.

Faculty in the ENG Cluster undertake funded industry-relevant research, teach courses in civil, mining, electrical, mechanical, material, marine and systems engineering as well as supervise graduate industry masters and doctorate students in relevant topics. They are also provided with paid leave to undertake consultancy work with industry and/or spend time attached with industry. We will prioritise collegial and team-spirited candidates with either (a) an earned PhD or equivalent from a reputable university with specialisation in any of the above-mentioned areas and some relevant work experience, or (b) extensive industry experience with demonstrated strong technical expertise in the above-mentioned areas. Fully funded PhD Position at ISEY - Institute for the Science of Early Years and Youth

Post Type Full Time Closing Date Tuesday 12 May 2026 Reference PHD001-26 A funded PhD position is available to work on a project exploring the impact of indoor and outdoor learning environments on children’s language and communication, and how AI can be used to analyse speech and language in this type of research. The project will build on ISEY’s previous research which found that overall noise levels in a class of 4-5 year olds were lower when matched activities were conducted outside (even on urban school grounds) compared to inside their usual classroom. The study found that the outdoor environment also supported the attention and prosocial behaviour of children who struggled indoors. This new project will use child wearables and explore how different AI tools and techniques can be combined to measure and test how indoor and outdoor environments affect the frequency, duration and complexity of children’s spontaneous speech and intra-group communication. The PhD will be based at ISEY, at the Stratford Campus of UEL. This lab is led by Sam Wass, and the PhD will be supervised by Gemma Goldenberg and Muhammad Ehatisham Ul Haq. The successful candidate would be working within a wider team of 20 researchers at ISEY, but would be the only researcher working on this specific project. This means there is some scope for the PhD candidate to contribute to shaping the project focus and design. Knowledge exchange and dissemination will be a key part of this PhD and the successful candidate will be expected to share project findings and associated research with teachers and early years practitioners, as part of the training and development services that ISEY offers. Therefore, this role is especially suitable for someone passionate about bridging the gap between research and practice and translating research for a non-scientific audience. This may involve writing articles for educator-facing publications, attending early years events and running online and face to face training, support will be given in these areas. Experience of working with children and an interest in educational practices, speech and language development, and outdoor learning is highly desirable. Familiarity with programming and data analysis tools is also preferable as the PhD will involve some advanced quantitative data analysis, although support will be given in this area. The PhD will start in September 2026. Funding covers tuition fees (approx. £5-8k per year) and a tax free living allowance for 3 years (approx £22-£24k per year if studying full time).
