About the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
Basic information and contact details for the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, known as UNIMORE, was established in 1175 and stands as one of the oldest universities in the world.
In the university’s early years its fortunes were determined by the ruling Este family and it was not until the late 18th century that the university regained its original status and prestige after it was given an imperial charter by Duke Francis II.
In 1998 the modern University of Modena and Reggio Emilia was formed after the Reggio Emilia site was instituted, creating a university primarily based in two nearby cities. Situated in the heart of northern Italy and only around 20km apart, the cities of Modena and Reggio Emilia are well connected to other European countries, and both cities are just a short drive from the ski resorts of the Alps and the beaches on Italy’s eastern coast.
Having initially been formed around the university’s School of Law, today there are 14 departments divided between five areas of interest: Technology, Life, Society, Health and Science.
UNIMORE has an impressive reputation as a result of its high quality research, conducted by 21 university departments and 11 medical departments. There are seven major areas of research: Advanced Mechanics and Automotive Design, Smart ICT, Stem cells and regenerative medicine, Nano and emerging materials and systems for sustainable technologies, genomic and molecular medicine, environments, food and health, and lastly models and methods for economic analysis.
There are 10 branches of the UNIMORE library between the towns of Modena and Reggio Emilia, as well as a number of museums and even a botanical garden.
