The University of Missouri-Kansas City is a public urban research university located on the Missouri side of Kansas City. Established nearly a century ago, the university is recognised for its small class sizes, highly engaged faculty and strong commitment to widening access to higher education.

Today the university serves over 15,000 students drawn from all 50 US states and more than 80 countries. It offers over 400 student groups and a wide range of academic programmes. It also offers study abroad opportunities. 

Around 80 per cent of undergraduates receive scholarships or grants, with nearly US$206 million awarded in financial aid last year.

From 2018 to 2022, spending on research almost doubled to US$53 million. Fundraising has also grown a lot, with US$94 million raised last year, exceeding goals.

The university comprises two main campuses: Volker Campus and Health Sciences Campus, both located in Kansas City. Student services include on-campus accommodation, health and wellness support, fitness and recreation facilities, and transport options such as shuttle buses, bike rentals and city buses.

B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) Reference no.: 5784 The research group “Atmospheric Transport Processes,” led by Prof. Andreas Stohl, is part of the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. The group develops the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART and studies all aspects of transport in the atmosphere, ranging from greenhouse gases to pollutants, water vapour and heat, and uses inverse modelling techniques to determine sources of greenhouse gases, radionuclides, or air pollutants. In the framework of the new research platform SPACETRACE (Pollution of the Atmosphere by a Rapidly Growing Space Industry) four new PhD positions are available, of which one is within our group and will focus on the transport of space-industry emissions in the atmosphere.  Your personal sphere of influence: We seek a highly motivated PhD student, who will carry out Lagrangian transport model simulations with FLEXPART, of the emissions originating from rocket launches as well as re-entering space objects. The PhD student will characterize transport patterns and timescales and will investigate transport differences between gaseous tracers (e.g., nitrogen oxides) and aerosols of different sizes (e.g., alumina particles). The student will work closely with the other three PhD students who will work on related topics. Your future tasks: Quantify the emissions caused by the space industry; Characterize the circulation patterns relevant for the emissions, and quantify concentrations and residence times of the emissions in different parts of the atmosphere (e.g., mesosphere, stratosphere, troposphere), Further develop the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART as required for this application; Perform case studies and compare simulation results with measurement data, e.g., as obtained by aircraft measurements in the stratosphere; Publish your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals; Teach classes within our bachelor or master programs in Meteorology (independently / within the scope of the provisions of the collective agreement); Strengthen the collaborative culture of our team and the Department. Become an active member of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS / doctoral school).  This is part of your personality: Completed master or diploma in the atmospheric sciences (e.g., meteorology, climatology), or a related field; Strong programming skills; Data analysis and interpretation experience; A good team spirit and willingness to collaborate; Very good command of the English language. These skills would be an advantage: Experience with Lagrangian transport models; Expert knowledge of programming, preferably in Python and/or Fortran; Experience with space-industry based emissions and their impact on the atmosphere. Job Purpose The Research Fellow will lead the development of a Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) biosensor platform for rapid detection of microbial bioburden in biopharmaceutical cleaning validation processes. The role involves aptamer discovery, nanomaterial-based SERS sensor development, and integration with microfluidic systems for real-time monitoring of cleaning validation washout fluids. Opportunities to contribute to patent filings, translational research, and commercialization pathways will be available. Key Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities Design and screen high-affinity ssDNA aptamers targeting environmental microorganisms listed in the US Pharmacopeia. Develop nanoparticle-based SERS substrates (Ag/Au nanoclusters) for enhanced Raman signal detection. Design and fabricate microfluidic sensing interfaces for continuous monitoring of cleaning validation fluids. Perform sensor validation using Raman spectroscopy, microbial cultures, and cleaning validation samples. Develop data analysis pipelines for Raman spectral classification, potentially integrating machine learning methods. Research & Project Responsibilities Plan and execute experimental workflows to achieve project milestones. Lead prototype development and performance optimization of the SERS biosensor system. Communicate research outcomes through technical reports, conference presentations, and scientific publications. Collaborate with industry partners and interdisciplinary research teams where applicable. Operational Responsibilities Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with Work Safety and Health (WSH) regulations. Manage procurement of specialized equipment and research consumables. Mentorship Mentor research engineers, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers. Contribute to training activities within the research group. Others To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. The project focuses on developing innovative methods for hydrogen generation using non-thermal plasma, both with and without catalytic materials. Plasma technologies offer a promising route for sustainable hydrogen production because they can activate molecules and drive chemical reactions at relatively low temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The successful candidate will investigate plasma processes for hydrogen production, including the role of plasma-generated reactive species and the interaction between plasma and catalytic surfaces. The research will explore how operating conditions such as gas composition, discharge power, pressure, and reactor configuration influence hydrogen production efficiency. The project will combine plasma reactor development, plasma diagnostics, and materials characterization. Techniques such as optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and laser diagnostic tools will be used to study plasma properties and reaction pathways. Catalysts materials will be analyzed using appropriate characterization techniques. Several plasma sources are already operating at the ACER CoE, together with optical and laser diagnostic systems. The goal of this research is to improve the understanding of plasma chemistry and plasma-catalyst interactions in order to develop more efficient and sustainable hydrogen production technologies. Key duties: Design and operate non-thermal plasma reactors Study the influence of operating conditions (gas composition, power, and reactor configuration) on hydrogen production. Job description: We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher specialized in electronics and embedded systems, capable of designing and deploying innovative IoT solutions for research projects such as air quality monitoring, water leak detection and energy monitoring of electric vehicle batteries. The candidate will need to master sensor technologies, embedded systems, and communication protocols, while integrating real-time data into cloud platforms to develop reliable, secure, and scalable solutions. Main tasks and responsibilities Design, develop, and test IoT solutions for air quality monitoring and electric vehicle battery tracking. Integrate environmental and energy sensors with real-time data collection and analysis systems. Deploy prototypes in the field and optimize their performance based on feedback. Guarantee the reliability, security and scalability of the IoT solutions developed. Work closely with research teams to produce usable data and contribute to scientific publications. Contribute to scientific publications and disseminate results to decision-makers and communities. Qualifications required PhD in one of the following fields: electronics and embedded systems, telecommunications, industrial computing, electrical engineering or equivalent. Expertise in the design, prototyping and deployment of IoT solutions for environmental and energy applications.
