About the University of Malaya

Basic information and contact details for the University of Malaya

institution
The University of Malaya, a public research university in Kuala Lumpur, is Malaysia’s oldest university, founded in 1905. Originally known as the King Edward VII College of Medicine, it was created to solve a shortage of medical assistants in Singapore and Penang during the late 1890s. It was then housed in the old asylum near the Singapore General Hospital. In 1949 the university merged with Raffles College, a school established in 1929 by the English for Malayans to study arts and social sciences, to become the University of Malaya, derived from the country’s name at the time. In 1960, the government decided that, due to its rapid growth, the university would be divided into two national universities, one in Singapore (now an autonomous separate university known as the National University of Singapore), and the other in Kuala Lumpur (established as its own institution in 1962, still retaining its name as the University of Malaya). The university’s Coat of Arms shows the leaves of the Palmyra palm, which were used as printing material for ancient Malay books. Across these is written the university’s motto, ‘Ilmu Puncha Kemajuan’, a mixture of words from Arabi, Sanskrit and Malay, which means "knowledge is the source of progress". In the centre are three Malayan tigers, symbolising the three main races in Malaysia: Malays, Chinese and Indians. Today the campus is located 12km from the centre of Kuala Lumpur, on 920 acres, which include an Olympic sized swimming pool and a lake with kayaking. It has been granted self-accreditation since 2009, and has more than 60 research centres with six research clusters. Notable alumni include two prime ministers of Malaysia, as well as many politicians and other prominent figures from Malaysia and abroad.

Deliver high-quality measurements of plant physiology and growth under defined environmental and acoustic conditions. Lead below-ground sampling and analyses, including root phenotyping/architecture assessment and root evaluation. Undertake rhizosphere-related measurements including root exudates and the collection and analysis of the root microbiome Set up pollination trials, including recording bee sounds, and acoustic stimulation. Contribute to reproductive/pollination-linked measures including nectar and pollen metrics. Work closely with the acoustics PDRA to align biological protocols with measurement requirements, and with the modelling PDRA to support model parameterisation and interpretation of simulation results. Maintain accurate experimental records, contribute to data curation and support and lead publication and dissemination activities. Candidate requirements Essential PhD (or near completion) or equivalent qualifications and experience in Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, Microbiology, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrable experience designing and running controlled environment plant experiments. Experience with bee behavioural experimental design and implementation. Post-doctoral Fellow, Department of Data and Systems Engineering

THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

The University of Hong Kong

institution

The University of Hong Kong

Hong Kong

Ref.: 533703 Work type: Full-time Department: Department of Data and Systems Engineering (14400) Categories: Senior Research Staff & Post-doctoral Fellow, Research Staff We are seeking highly motivated researchers to join our project on “Planning and Scheduling of Automated Material Handling Systems in Semiconductor Manufacturing Environments.” This project is carried out in collaboration with leading semiconductor companies and targets real-world, industrially relevant challenges. Our goal is to advance cutting-edge research while ensuring strong practical applicability. The research will concentrate on three interrelated areas:  a) Semiconductor Equipment Scheduling: In semiconductor fabs, a vast number of wafers are processed across hundreds or even thousands of manufacturing tools following highly complex workflows. We aim to develop optimization models and algorithms to improve wafer processing sequences across semiconductor manufacturing tools, with the objectives of reducing cycle times and lowering work-in-progress (WIP) inventory, thereby increasing throughput and overall manufacturing efficiency. b) Automated Material Handling System (AMHS) Scheduling: In modern semiconductor fabs, AMHS, typically realized through Overhead Hoist Transport (OHT), is responsible for transferring wafers between manufacturing tools. Given the massive production scale, the AMHS must handle tens of thousands of transports requests every day, ensuring timely and reliable delivery of wafers to the correct tools. Our research seeks to develop efficient and adaptive scheduling algorithms for AMHS systems to significantly reduce transport delays, improve material flow, and enhance coordination between logistics and manufacturing processes. c) Digital Twin System: We aim to construct a digital twin framework that integrates real-time data and simulation models to mirror the physical manufacturing and logistics systems. This enables performance monitoring, predictive analysis, and the evaluation of scheduling strategies in a virtual environment, thereby supporting more robust and adaptive decision-making in semiconductor manufacturing. Responsibilities:  a) To address the above challenges, applicants are expected to formulate mathematical models of the problems and develop efficient solution methods, particularly by leveraging techniques from machine learning and operations research. b) The applicants are expected to deliver research outcomes to our industry partners, to support practical applications in semiconductor manufacturing. c) The applicants are expected to write and submit high-quality academic papers. Qualifications a) Education: Ph.D. in Automation, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field. b) Technical Skills: Strong programming proficiency is required. c) Research Experience: Relevant research experience in related problem domains, or research experience in scheduling, routing, and multi-agent pathfinding (MAPF) algorithms - Experience across multiple areas is a strong plus; Experience developing ML-based optimization approaches is a strong plus; A strong publication track record is highly desirable. d) Industry collaboration experience: Prior experience in collaborative R&D with industry partners is a strong plus. Application: Send your CV, a cover letter, and the contact information of three referees to Dr. Anbang Liu (anbang@hku.hk) and cc to Prof. Lin (shaoclin@hku.hk). The complete reference letters should be submitted as soon as possible after the application.
