Tishreen University is the third largest university in Syria, with over 70,000 students and faculty. When the university was originally founded in 1971 it was comprised of just three faculties: Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Agriculture. It has since developed and now has 280 academic degrees across a wide variety of disciplines at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, with a particular focus on the sciences. Tishreen is comprised of 17 colleges, three specialised higher institutes, eight technical institutes, three centres of excellence and several specialised hospitals, including Tishreen University Hospital. It has an array of modern facilities, including libraries, laboratories and recreational facilities, as well as several extra-curricular activities and clubs that students can enjoy alongside their studies. The university is located in the city of Latakia. The university collaborates with national and international institutions and businesses to further academic and research development, with links to the University of Florence, the University of Barcelona, Manara University and Syrian Telecom, among others.

Work that matters In this role, you will lead the next stage of Adelaide University’s Smart Stormwater Systems journey. You will help deliver a real-world demonstration site that turns award-recognised research into practice. The site will show how distributed storages, smart design and real-time control can reduce urban flood peaks, adapt to climate change and avoid costly and disruptive pipe upgrades. It can also unlock co-benefits like water harvesting for greener, cooler suburbs and improved water quality. Working with an interdisciplinary team including committed local government funding partners, you’ll shape the vision, coordinate design and delivery, and translate data, models and on-ground monitoring into practical outcomes. The aim is to demonstrate this can be scaled and adopted across cities—helping communities adapt to climate change while creating infrastructure that is smarter and more resilient. The team The Smart Stormwater Systems team is led by Associate Professor Mark Thyer and Professor Holger Maier (Adelaide University), who bring complementary strengths across modern civil and environmental engineering. Mark Thyer is an international recognised expert in hydrology and water resources with 20+ years’ experience in flood and drought risk, climate variability and forecasting/uncertainty. Holger Maier is internationally recognised for developing and applying AI/machine learning, optimisation (notably evolutionary algorithms), and decision-support methods for complex water and infrastructure systems operating under uncertainty, and he has received major recognition for both research excellence and engineering education leadership, including international modelling and simulation awards and senior editorial/service roles in the field. Together, they lead an interdisciplinary group with a strong track record of funded, high-impact research and close collaboration with industry and government partners. Can we measure gravitational effects on entangled photons for shining light onto the interface of quantum physics and gravity? Your personal sphere of influence: As a university assistant (PraeDoc) on this 4-year position, you will be part of the research group “Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation”, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Philip Walther. The group is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information group at the Faculty of Physics, and a member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) – one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe – and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA. The group’s research combines the development of scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and other quantum information applications with the investigation of fundamental quantum science questions.The main activities range from quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media and detectors based on superconductor technology to interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces. You will also benefit from being a fellow of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), being part of a thriving community with more than 100 quantum scientists on the premises, about 300 quantum researchers in Vienna. The Walther Group unites an international team of scientists who are passionate about research in quantum optics, quantum information and quantum technologies. Our 35 researchers, from undergraduate student and PhD candidate to postdoc, are working together on mostly experimental topics in small subgroups. Teamwork is a key factor in our group’s success. Together we have assembled a unique skill set and knowledge base in quantum information, quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum foundations as well as the quantum-gravity interface. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You are involved in a specific and well-funded research project dedicated to experimental quantum optics in 2D materials. You will present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. This will be reviewed and adapted on an annual basis. You will contribute to teaching (lab courses, exercise classes) within the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. The contract is for six months. The work will involve the analysis of sediments, recording of laboratory results, data entry and contribution to the drafting of reports and research papers. Full training will be given in the sediment analysis techniques necessary for the work. You should be an enthusiastic and highly organised individual who will be expected to participate in all aspects of the programme of work, including: the day-to-day running of the research project; sediment granulometry and geochemistry, data recording, entry and interpretation; communicating with Professor Hunt and the wider Shanidar Project team, and assisting with the production of internal reports and manuscripts for publication.
