The University of Kitakyushu’s predecessor, Kokura Foreign Studies College, was founded in 1946. It was only renamed the University of Kitakyushu in 2000. It is a public university located in Kitakyushu, Japan. The university is comprised of two campuses, Kitagata and Hibikino. Kitagata is the university’s oldest campus and has a number of facilities including a 14-story main tower, a library, and a Centre for International Education and Exchange. The Hibikino campus is situated in the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park, alongside various other scientific institutes. This campus is involved in joint research programmes and academic exchanges with nearby universities.The Park has communal state-of-the-art facilities, available for students to use. The university aims to contribute to the environmental and technological developments of the 21st century using the Park’s resources. Students at the university have the choice of five undergraduate faculties to specialise in: economics and business administration; foreign studies; humanities; law (all of which are taught at the Kitagata campus) and environmental engineering (which is based at the Hibikino campus). The university’s graduate school has courses available in social system studies and environmental engineering. There is an extensive overseas study programme available at the university, with partnerships in the US, UK, Australia, China and South Korea. The study abroad programme was initiated in 2008. Working closely with the local community, the university is committed to using its education and research to solve regional problems. This was recognised in the 2008 University Regional Contribution Ranking as the university placed first out of 730 other Japanese universities.

Role Overview We are looking for a motivated Material Science and Engineering Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will lead the development and testing of materials for various applications, contributing to innovative projects that drive our mission forward. This involves researching, developing, testing, and processing materials like metals, plastics, and ceramics to improve product performance. You will lead and apply best practices in materials science and engineering. Key responsibilities include analysing material structures at the atomic level, conducting failure analysis, selecting materials for new products, and optimizing manufacturing processes Responsibilities R&D: Lead material selection, development, and characterization for applications in electronics, aerospace, or biomedical devices; evaluate and integrate new analytical instrumentation. Testing & Characterization: Design and execute experiments to evaluate mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties; analyze data to inform design decisions. Failure Analysis: Root-cause investigation of material failures; recommend and validate corrective actions. Process Development: Optimize manufacturing processes (e.g., casting, coating); qualify and collaborate with suppliers with minimal supervision. Collaboration & Communication: Partner with design, manufacturing, and supply chain teams; deliver clear technical reports and presentations. Sustainability & Compliance: Assess environmental impact of materials; maintain lab safety and regulatory compliance. Required and Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's in Materials Science/Engineering or related field + 2+ years of experience in materials R&D or product development. Hands-on experience with materials characterization (e.g., SEM, XRD, FTIR, mechanical testing). Proficiency in data analysis tools (Python, MATLAB, JMP) and technical documentation. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Resourceful, meticulous and problem-solving attitude. Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies: Experience with CAD/CAE tools (SolidWorks, ANSYS) and DFM/DFA principles. Knowledge of industry standards (ASTM, ISO) and regulatory frameworks (e.g., ISO 13485 for biomedical). Characterization: SEM/EDS, XRD, DSC/TGA, tensile/impact testing. Software: Thermo-Calc, Materials Studio, Python/R for data analysis, CAD (SolidWorks). Processes: Experience with additive manufacturing, thin-film deposition, or polymer processing. Standards: Familiarity with ASTM, ISO, or industry-specific material specifications.

Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. Job Purpose The Research Fellow will lead the development of a Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) biosensor platform for rapid detection of microbial bioburden in biopharmaceutical cleaning validation processes. The role involves aptamer discovery, nanomaterial-based SERS sensor development, and integration with microfluidic systems for real-time monitoring of cleaning validation washout fluids. Opportunities to contribute to patent filings, translational research, and commercialization pathways will be available. Key Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities Design and screen high-affinity ssDNA aptamers targeting environmental microorganisms listed in the US Pharmacopeia. Develop nanoparticle-based SERS substrates (Ag/Au nanoclusters) for enhanced Raman signal detection. Design and fabricate microfluidic sensing interfaces for continuous monitoring of cleaning validation fluids. Perform sensor validation using Raman spectroscopy, microbial cultures, and cleaning validation samples. Develop data analysis pipelines for Raman spectral classification, potentially integrating machine learning methods. Research & Project Responsibilities Plan and execute experimental workflows to achieve project milestones. Lead prototype development and performance optimization of the SERS biosensor system. Communicate research outcomes through technical reports, conference presentations, and scientific publications. Collaborate with industry partners and interdisciplinary research teams where applicable. Operational Responsibilities Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with Work Safety and Health (WSH) regulations. Manage procurement of specialized equipment and research consumables. Abstract: This research assistant focuses on the design, prototyping, and testing of bio-inspired drones, inspired by the aerodynamics and adaptability of natural flyers such as birds and bats. The candidate will contribute to the mechanical design, composite fabrication, and experimental validation of UAV structures, integrating morphing wings and additive manufacturing processes for high-performance and energy-efficient drones. Background in CAD/CAE, structural design, or composite materials. Practical experience in additive manufacturing or mechanical testing is an advantage.
