The University of Jijel is located in Jijel, Algeria.
The university started of as an annexe of the University of Constantine in 1986 and was then converted to a teacher's training college in 1988. After a few more changes and expansions it became the University of Jijel in 2003.
There are two campuses in Jijel and in Tassoust. The majority of teaching occurs at the Jijel campus, while economic sciences and management; letters and languages; human and social sciences and Arabic language and literature are taught at the Tassoust campus.
The university has seven faculties including sciences and technology; exact sciences and informatics; natural and life sciences; economics, commerce and management sciences; law and political science; letters and languages and human and social sciences. Students can study at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
There are three centres at the university. These are the Centre for Intensive Language Teaching, the Centre for Systems Networks and the Print and Audio-Visual Centre. The Hall of Technology for Teaching Exact and Technological Sciences is also present on campus.
There are a number of research laboratories at the university conducting research in many areas including theoretical physics, renewable energies, socio-linguistics and molecular and cell biology.
Jijel is the capital city of the Jijel province and is flanked by the Mediterranean Sea. Jijel is well-known for cork processing, leather tanning and steelmaking. Local crops include citrus and grain and fishing is also of great importance. It is located 30km from Taza National Park. The park is home to many flora and fauna as well as the endangered Barbary macaque.
