About the University of Genoa

The University of Genoa was founded in 1471 as a college of theology, and over the following centuries it has grown to become one of Italy’s largest universities.

Today the university has 22 departments that are organised into five schools, with most teaching and research being undertaken in the university buildings that are dotted around the city of Genoa although there are also some regional campuses in the Liguria region of northern Italy. The University of Genoa also shares a branch campus with Florida International University which both universities use to host their respective architecture schools.

Among the facilities and programs offered by the University of Genoa are a fully equipped sports centre, free Italian language courses for non-native speakers and a number of libraries.

As well as having multiple campuses the University of Genoa is also home to 53 research departments, and since 2005 it has worked closely with the Genoa-based Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and together they have made significant progress in the field of robotics with the development of iCub, a humanoid robot, and a prosthetic hand able to replace a missing arm.

Graduates of the University of Genoa include some key figures in Italian history, such as Franco Malerba, the first Italian astronaut, former Italian president Sandro Pertini and former Fiat chairman Paolo Fresco.

We are looking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher with experience and expertise in synthetic transition metal chemistry, to be based in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Southampton as part of the group of Prof. Gill Reid (G.Reid@soton.ac.uk). This postdoctoral fellowship is part of the EXPRESS (Exploiting Single Source Precursors for the Electrochemical Growth of Functional 1D and 2D Metal Dichalcogenide Semiconductors) Programme Grant recently announced by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). EXPRESS is a large (£10M) flagship, interdisciplinary research programme over 5-years. It is led jointly by the Universities of Southampton and Warwick, alongside several international and industrial partners, and brings together internationally leading teams from across chemistry, physics and electronic engineering. It aims to deliver a step-change in the understanding and control of electrochemical growth of high-quality mono/few-layer functional transition metal dichalcogenides TMDCs, combining precursor design and synthesis, electrochemistry, solution and surface computation, advanced characterisation and device integration. In addition to the essential disciplinary research skills, candidates should demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for collaborative working, the ability to communicate effectively across disciplines, and well-developed organisational skills. In this role your primary focus will be the synthesis, spectroscopic and structural characterisation of a range of new molecular complexes that contain the pre-assembled metal dichalcogenide (ME2) building block that forms the target TMDC. You will work in close collaboration with the electrochemistry experts who will investigate their effectiveness as single source precursors for the electrodeposition range of high quality semi-conducting and semi-metallic TMDCs. You will be required to be flexible and interact effectively with colleagues across the wider EXPRESS consortium to fulfil the scientific goals of the Programme. The position is offered for 24 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for up to 3 further years. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. This role supports the Future Ship and System Design (FSSD) Programme, which aims to accelerate the decarbonisation and digitalisation of Singapore’s maritime sector. The project focuses on developing planning methods to support the electrification of harbour craft fleets, using real-world operational data to derive charging demand profiles and infrastructure recommendations. As part of this work, we are seeking a Research Fellow to lead the development of a user-friendly GUI tool that will enable stakeholders to interact with planning models and visualise simulation outputs. The RF will also support increasing coordination between different projects as the number of case studies and incoming datasets continues to grow. Key Responsibilities: Design and develop a GUI tool to make model inputs/outputs accessible to end-users Collaborate with project leads and researchers to ensure technical accuracy of the interface Support integration of simulation outputs across Projects 3-1 and 3-2 Manage and process large sets of operational data for case study analysis Contribute expertise in power grid optimisation to enhance planning models Participate in stakeholder engagements and respond to evolving technical needs Job Requirements: A strong background in power systems, energy modelling, or grid optimisation Proficiency in GUI development (e.g. using Python Dash, Tkinter, or web-based frameworks) Experience working with data-driven simulation and model validation in power grids (Ph.D level is mandatory) Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment Prior exposure to maritime or transport-related electrification studies is a plus

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in marine ecology, marine biology, biogeochemistry, geochemistry, environmental science, or a related discipline. They should have strong research experience in field-based marine ecology, including leading or coordinating marine or coastal fieldwork, and demonstrated experience with stable isotope analyses and related data analyses in ecological or biogeochemical contexts. A track record of question-driven research, as evidenced by publications or other research outputs commensurate with career stage, is expected. The successful candidate should have excellent communication, organizational and collaborative skills, and be able to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team. The appointee will join an active research group at SWIMS and SBS working at the interface of marine ecology and conservation, with a particular focus on stable isotope approaches. They will contribute to the design, implementation and analysis of research projects on marine ecology and biogeochemistry using stable isotope tools, conduct and coordinate fieldwork in marine and coastal ecosystems, and carry out sample collection, processing and laboratory analyses. They will lead data analysis and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, reports and grant proposals. The appointee will oversee junior research staff and research assistants, and will contribute to the supervision and mentoring of students involved in related projects. Example research focal areas such as trophic ecology, blue carbon ecosystems, and human impacts on coastal ecosystems are welcome, as are other innovative ideas that complement and extend existing work within SWIMS and SBS. The appointee will have opportunities to develop their own research agenda and to pursue new methods or interdisciplinary collaborations within the broader SWIMS and MSc environment. The appointee will be expected to contribute to research-led teaching and training associated with an MSc programme in marine ecology and conservation, through involvement in appropriate teaching activities, mentoring of MSc students and support for field- and project-based learning, as agreed with the programme leadership. They will be required to work at both the SWIMS facilities and on the main HKU campus and at field sites in Hong Kong and surrounding waters. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.
