About the Role As Senior Place and Partnership Manager, you will operate at the heart of LJMU’s external engagement agenda, working closely with senior leaders, colleagues across the University, and partners throughout the Liverpool City Region and nationally. You will: Drive the development and delivery of LJMU’s Place and Partnership strategic priorities, ensuring alignment with the University Strategy 2030. Build and enhance strategic partnerships that support inclusive economic growth, community empowerment and regional skills development. Lead external engagement activity, ensuring regular, meaningful dialogue with key civic, public, private and third-sector stakeholders. Communicate LJMU’s impact, shaping messaging and narratives that reflect our civic mission and the positive change we help deliver across the region. Support governance and reporting, contributing to briefings, papers and insight for the Executive Leadership Team, Vice-Chancellor and Board of Governors. This is an exciting, outward-facing role for someone motivated by collaboration, innovation and civic purpose. About You We’re looking for someone who can bring credibility, influence and strategic insight to this important portfolio. You will have: A relevant degree or equivalent qualification, or proven track record of extensive relevant work experience. Significant experience developing and delivering strategic initiatives and partnership programmes. Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage confidently with senior external stakeholders across sectors. Outstanding communication skills, able to articulate complex messages clearly and compellingly to internal and external audiences. Evidence of managing partnerships and representing organisations externally with professionalism and impact. Excellent organisational and planning skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively in a dynamic environment. About the Job The University of East London (UEL) in partnership with STRABAG UK is embarking on a collaborative Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with the overall aim of development and commercialising a pioneering, sustainable grout made from repurposed organic and earth-based materials. The project leverages advanced materials engineering expertise to deliver an innovative, eco-friendly, low-carbon tunnelling solution that is first-of-its-kind. This will contribute to addressing the urgent need to address the climate emergency and help achieve carbon emissions reduction targets. We are seeking a Civil Engineering and Materials (KTP Associate) to join the team. As a KTP Associate you will deliver an innovative project as an employee of the University of East London, but will spend most of your working time at the company’s premises and sites. Technical Tracing the complex binding, self-forming, self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms (e.g., hydration, silicatisation, sequestration) reactions in Realtime, their interdependencies, and complex response to the environmental factors and controllers. Adaptation of the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) current technology to suit the new grout. Learning, deploying, and transferring a novel risk-based, probabilistic design approach Mastering and deploying a holistic design approach, with diverse performance indicators including environmental, engineering, ecological and financial, alongside logistical targets including workability, time, material procurement and flow. Deploying the novel grout at large for a highly sensitive infrastructure. Overseeing material adaptability, supplier diversification and compliance integration. Transferring the methods, tools, and techniques to STRABAG employees and stakeholders, who will be both technical and non-technical. People and Change Management Working well within the multi-disciplinary teams in STRABAG. Understanding impact on existing staff. Understanding impact, the new material will have on existing equipment and site storage areas. Working out how to embed the new technology associated with the new grout within the organisation and wider company group. Understanding the challenges in designing/implementing new methods. About You You should have A good honours degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Engineering Geology. A Master of Science (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Tunnelling Engineering, Material Science and/or Engineering (e.g., Concrete Technology), Engineering Geology or a relevant area. Good knowledge of geotechnical engineering and/or engineering materials. Excellent written and oral English language skills. Independence and ability to work with little supervision. An ability to use initiative and apply creativity, to solve problems. An ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams. An Ability to communicate clearly using different means and produce professional reports. An ability to effectively manage time and meet project deliverables deadlines. You ideally (desirable but not essential) have Ph.D. in relevant subject areas. Good knowledge of grout technology. Awareness/knowledge of geochemistry. Coding, programming, and machine learning. The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT. Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules. Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs. Job Requirements A good degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications like registered PE would be advantageous. Deep technical specialist with 10 or more years of working experience in mechanical design, systems design and integration or related area in mechatronics would be preferred. Experience in following areas are highly desirable: Complex Mechanical systems development and integration Material and components selection including working knowledge with integration and selection of components/systems such as actuators, pumps, hydraulics system, PLC/Controls systems CAD software such as SolidWorks Simulation such as Finite element and CFD simulation Hands-on prototyping and fabrication skills to guide students in labs It will be advantageous with working knowledge of Material testing and material properties Programming of Control and PLC systems Software such as Ansys and Abaqus Extensive hands-on experience and knowledge of industry practices and engineering principles to bring industry perspective to SIT. Keen interest in innovation projects, with demonstrated ability in developing solutions to technical problems. Strong supervisory skills and enjoy working closely with students in an educational environment. Demonstrate proficiency to keep abreast of development in the field and pursue professional certification programs. Possess industrial certifications in relevant areas will be an added advantage.
