Job Description SCHOOL OF CHINESE MEDICINE TEACHING AND RESEARCH DIVISION The School of Chinese Medicine was established in 1999 and offers comprehensive education programmes in Chinese medicine, including both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine. The School is engaged in a wide range of research projects, provides Chinese medicine healthcare services to the community, and seeks to foster modernisation of the Chinese medicine profession. To consolidate the strengths of innovative research, the School has established eight high quality theme-based Research Centres equipped with advanced equipment and facilities. The highlighted strategic research areas in the School include (1) Precision medicine and phenomics study; (2) Translational medicine and innovative drug discovery; and (3) Authentication and testing of Chinese medicines. Assistant Professor / Associate Professor (23240880) The School of Chinese Medicine now invites applications for faculty position at the Assistant Professor / Associate Professor level. Applicants should possess a PhD in Chinese Medicine or related disciplines. Excellent interpersonal communication and scientific writing skills are required. Preference will be given to candidates with appealing external grant record, outstanding publication and leading potential of innovative therapeutic intervention in both Chinese and Western Medicine and Biomedical Science. The appointee is also expected to teach basic theory and diagnostics of Chinese and Western Medicine at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; establish a vigorous research programme in the areas of interest; and develop research cluster by collaborations within and outside the School. This is a tenure-track position with an initial appointment on a fixed-term contract of up to three years. Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to mutual agreement. Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (23240130) To strengthen the research capacity, power the current research disciplinaries of SCM and keep up with the evolving global research environment of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the School is hiring a full-time faculty member at Assistant Professor level or above related to data science and/or computational chemistry. The data science expert, preferably with research experience in Chinese Medicine-related projects, will interact closely with the current faculty members on collaborative research projects to bring breakthrough efforts in the modern Chinese medicine research field. Candidates should possess a PhD degree in or related areas and relevant postdoctoral training with experience in and a strong understanding of bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational drug discovery and translational research. Preference will be given to candidates with appealing external grant records, outstanding publication and leading potential in research areas of clinical or populational studies with innovative therapeutic interventions. Overseas experience in world-class universities and good English communication skills are highly desirable. HKBU provides a vibrant research environment that bridges traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with state-of-the-art biomedical sciences, fostering unique opportunities for interdisciplinary innovation in aging research, immune regulation, and regenerative medicine. The ideal candidate is expected to advance the SCM’s strategic priorities by investigating mechanisms of aging; elucidating pathways underlying immune dysregulation and inflammatory diseases; defining the biological basis of tissue degeneration across musculoskeletal, metabolic, and inflammatory systems; applying cutting-edge multi-omics technologies such as single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to translational research; and developing novel therapeutic strategies and biomarkers that integrate Chinese medicine concepts with modern biomedical science. Responsibilities: Conduct research on aging biology, immune dysregulation, inflammation, and tissue degeneration; Lead translational projects employing single-cell sequencing, immune profiling, transgenic models, and molecular biology to uncover pathomechanisms and therapeutic targets in arthritis, osteoporosis, intervertebral disc degeneration, and autoimmune diseases; Develop innovative research directions in immune aging and degenerative disorders, including novel diagnostic or therapeutic strategies inspired by herbal medicine, natural products, or TCM syndrome biology; Collaborate with clinical and industry partners to translate research findings into practical applications; Supervise postgraduate students and research staff, and contribute to the academic activities of the SCM; and Prepare competitive research grant proposals and publish high-quality scientific papers.
