The University of Cauca was founded in April 1827 through a decree by Francisco de Paula Santander, making it one of the oldest public institutions of higher education in Colombia. Its origins trace back to the colonial era, with the Major Seminary of Popayán established in the early seventeenth century serving as a formative precursor.
The university is located in Popayán, the capital of the Cauca Department in southwestern Colombia.
The University of Cauca comprises into nine faculties: arts, agricultural sciences, health sciences, accounting, economics and management, humanities and social sciences, natural sciences exact and education, law, political and social sciences, civil engineering, and electronic and telecommunications engineering. These faculties offer a variety of degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supported by a wide range of research groups and continuing education initiatives.
Internationally, the university has developed partnerships with institutions across the globe including countries such as Sweden, Hungary, Spain, Mexico, and Peru.
