The Neuroscience Center is an international research unit within Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE). The mission of the Neuroscience center is to advance fundamental discoveries in neurosciences to understand how the brain gives rise to complex behaviors in health and disease and to promote health and wellbeing by translating research findings into improvements in the treatments, preventions and diagnostics of psychiatric and neurological disorders. The research groups at the institute operate across several scales from neurogenetics, neurobiology, to systems and computational neuroscience. The Neuroscience Center invites applications from outstanding candidates for GROUP LEADER with focus on computational neuroscience and neuro-AI. The position is fixed term (non tenure track) with 5 + 4 years upon succesful external mid-term evaluation. We offer an international, inspiring, and supportive research environment. NC hosts state-of-art infrastructures and neuroscience research facilities including neuronal iPS core, multiphoton microscopes, optogenetics, in vivo imaging and electrophysiology. The members of NC have also an access to cutting-edge human brain imaging (MRI, MEG, EEG, TMS, tACS), supercomputing via center for scientific computing (CSC) as well as Finnish biobank and Finngen data. We are looking for candidates with an excellent track-record of research performance with post-doctoral experience. The qualification include: PhD degree from a relevant field within the past 12 years (not including parental / sick leaves). Postdoctoral experience Excellent scientific track record in publications and research funding Evidence of independence We expect successful candidates to carry out independent research line, engage in multidisciplinary research collaborations, and participate in the supervision of students. The role is embedded within the ARC E2Crop Hub and the Centre for Atomaterials and Nanomanufacturing (RMIT University), which focus on renewable energy systems, intelligent sensing, advanced materials, and nanoscale device technologies. The successful candidate will develop machine learning approaches (including generative models and physics-informed neural networks) to design and optimise integrated photonic devices and metasurfaces. This includes building automated workflows that link electromagnetic simulation tools with AI models to accelerate device discovery and performance optimisation. The role involves applying computational methods such as topology optimisation, adjoint techniques, and data-driven modelling to identify high-performance, manufacturable photonic structures while accounting for fabrication limits and multi-physics effects. You will also contribute to internal software tools that support rapid prototyping and enable broader research teams to use AI-driven design methods. The position offers access to advanced computational infrastructure and fabrication facilities, supporting research at the intersection of photonics, AI, and nanotechnology.
