A great opportunity for a Student Success Coach to join the University of Surrey to proactively engage with students who may not be achieving their full potential or may be at risk of leaving the University.

You will have a particular focus on supporting transition into higher education, to ensure retention and progression amongst those most at risk. The role will be assigned to Surrey Business School, but will work collaboratively across the University, on an initial 12 month Fixed-Term contract.

The role

You will ideally have experience of providing student advice in similar, or related roles, preferably within Higher Education, with strong, proven, interpersonal skills and ability to act with great empathy, care and patience. You’ll be expected to:


	Proactively identify students at risk of leaving the University through the use of existing engagement and assessment data, through the generation of new data, referrals from personal tutors, the senior personal tutor and those resitting or returning to study.  
	Intervene on a 1:1 basis to support good student outcomes. Initiate and maintain contact with students, using a range of communications channels and build a trusted relationship with individuals.
	Arrange regular sessions, providing students with a confidential space to discuss challenges and oversee ongoing bespoke pastoral and academic study skills and assessment support.
	Explore and actively enable students to engage with a range of additional sources of University support or advice, as appropriate to the individual case, liaising with academic colleagues with the school and other professional services staff to ensure effective referral and advice for students.
	Maintain regular, ongoing 1:1 support sessions to monitor progress, support the student in developing agency and ensure regular communications occur with students to maintain a sense of belonging to their programmes and to the wide University community.

Description

The Societal Psychology Laboratory led by Dr Jennifer Sheehy-Skeffington in the Division of Science, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a postdoctoral associate to work on research into the psychological consequences of poverty.

The successful applicant will join an active research program on the impact of financial adversity and socioeconomic marginalization on emotion, cognitive functioning, self-regulation, and decision-making. Our lab’s work has focused to date on how financial strain shapes present oriented decision-making and how the salience of low socioeconomic standing links to fatalistic attitudes and internalized shame. We are now turning to examine how social and economic policies can mitigate these effects, with a particular focus on the forms of solidarity built into initiatives such as universal basic income. Key mediating mechanisms in this research are perceptions of power, control, meritocracy, and societal belonging. The successful candidate will lead the design, implementation, and write-up of lab-based, survey, and potentially field research on these questions, in collaboration with the lab PI and other lab members. The candidate will join a strong social and political psychology research group made up of faculty, graduate students, post-docs, and undergraduate students.

Applicants must hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in social psychology or a related field (such as cognitive, experimental, or evolutionary psychology, or behavioral science). Applications are encouraged from PhD holders or graduating PhD students with a solid emerging publication record, a background in the study of poverty, socioeconomic status, economic inequality, or social class, and experience with experimental, longitudinal, and survey methods. Expertise in the analysis of longitudinal and multilevel data, computational modelling, and/or natural language processing is a plus.

Founded in 1999, the Department (https://www.ln.edu.hk/cultural/) is the forerunner of offering a BA degree in Cultural Studies in Hong Kong. Our Master of Cultural Studies Programme, launched in 2003, gives students from mixed academic and working backgrounds the opportunity to reflect on and devise alternative ways to approach their ongoing practices. Our Research Postgraduate Programmes (MPhil & PhD) train aspiring researchers to develop in-depth inquiry into specific areas of interest. General Requirements

The appointee must have a strong background in Cultural Studies and related areas and proven teaching and research ability in the following areas: techno culture, social and cultural innovation, commons and community, youth culture, urban studies, and cultures of everyday life.

The appointed candidate will be a committed academic with a record of research and scholarship of international stature who will be able to demonstrate commitment to the vision and orientation of the Department and the University. The appointee should demonstrate a track record of quality publications and grants-based research in areas relevant to the department’s profile. Solid experience in administrative leadership would be preferable.

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
