About Université Catholique de Louvain

Basic information and contact details for Université Catholique de Louvain

institution

Founded via decree by Pope Martin V in 1425, Université Catholique de Louvain, often abbreviated as UCLouvain, is one of the oldest Catholic universities in Europe.

UCLouvain is the biggest French-speaking university in Belgium, and was separated in 1968 into two institutions. Today UCLouvain's sister university Katholieke Universiteit Leuven operates independently in Leuven, while UCLouvain remains in Wallonia and Brussels.

With campuses spread across six locations in Belgium including Louvain-la-Neuve, Woluwe, Mons, Tournai, Brussels and Charleroi Saint-Gilles, Université Catholique de Louvain plays host to 15 schools and faculties focusing its degree programmes and research in various subjects such as: theology, law and criminology, management, psychology and educational science, public health and architecture.

The university, which is known for its stringent selection process including entrance exams, remains an appealing prospect for local and international students who from a wide range of countries. The majority of courses are taught in French, but the university is taking steps towards offering English courses as well.

To help newcomers successfully adapt to their new surroundings, student associations (often called Cercles and Régionales) arrange cultural activities such as conferences, trips and museum visits.

Students have the unique chance to live with up to 10 other flatmates in theme-based shared apartments called kots with the intention being to work on a project, but also to challenge negative cultural, religious or gender stereotypes.

UCLouvain's most famous alumni include mathematician Vitold Belevich, Queen Mathilde of Belgium and economist Vera Songwe.

Description The Water Research Center, New York University Abu Dhabi, is seeking to hire an Associate Research Scientist to develop calix[n]arene-based covalent organic frameworks for water purification. The successful candidate will develop new calix[n]arene-based covalent organic frameworks for water purification applications. To explore this area of macrocycle-based porous frameworks for water contaminant removal, the candidate will be involved in the directed synthesis of organic macrocycle containing linkers and porous frameworks and then investigate the supramolecular interactions with various organic pollutants. This would require knowledge in the design and synthesis of porous frameworks, particularly in techniques such as Schlenk line, glove box, powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microscopy, and porosity analysis. The candidate is expected to have a thorough understanding of the analytical techniques used to characterize the materials. Experience in the application of such materials to water treatment is preferred. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Applicants must have a PhD in chemistry or materials science. Excellent experimental and synthetic skills relevant to the project (particularly, synthesis of covalent organic frameworks) are required. The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Research Fellow B in Linguistics

UNIVERSITY OF SURREY

University of Surrey

United Kingdom, Guildford

institution

University of Surrey

United Kingdom, Guildford

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.  We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee. Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference. The role Postdoctoral position in linguistic phylogenetics and computational tool building Prof Erich Round is seeking qualified applicants for a one-year part-time postdoctoral role on “REVOLUPHON: Rational Evolutionary Phonology". This postdoctoral project contributes to the modelling and data components in the ERC-selected, UKRI-funded project "Rational Evolutionary Phonology", led by Erich Round in 2024–2029. The position is based at the Surrey Morphology Group at the University of Surrey, and provides the opportunity to work in the vibrant and highly collegial research environment for which SMG is renowned. Background REVOLUPHON is an ambitious project in computational cognitive science, cultural evolution and phonological theory, which seeks deeper explanations for human phonology. Though phonological theories are diverse, they contain recurrent axioms and atoms: segments, features, prosodic units, et cetera. We hypothesise that these units of representation are explicable in terms of the interaction of phonetics with resource limitations on human cognition (resource rationality). Separately, recent decades show that phonologies can be reasonably well modelled as optimisation problems, with optimisation imputed to the mind. We hypothesise that apparent optimisation, and its exceptions, arise because phonologies undergo cultural evolution, an optimising process. REVOLUPHON tests these hypotheses through computational modelling of cognition and cultural evolution, to develop new foundations for phonological theory. Responsibilities The candidate will be a member of a research team focused on achieving the REVOLUPHON project aims, and will have the opportunity to participate in the broader activities both of the REVOLUPHON group and of the Surrey Morphology Group (SMG). Please refer to the full job description, under ‘Addendum’ for key responsibilities.  About you Please refer to the full job description, under ‘Addendum’ for essential and desirable criteria.  The position is part time (two days per week) and the successful candidate will be required to work on-site at the University of Surrey, Guildford for both days. How to apply To apply, please upload a CV along with your application to the University website. You will also be asked some brief questions to help us understand your suitability for the role.  The following documents will be required: CV Contact details for 2 referees. DOI/URL links to up to three relevant works of research. Link to one or more public repositories illustrating coding work. Further details Job Description
