About the University of Bayreuth

Basic information and contact details for the University of Bayreuth

The University of Bayreuth is located in the city of the same name in Germany. The institution was founded in 1975 with dual goals: a committed international outlook and the development of interdisciplinary research and subjects.

Subjects offered at undergraduate level in Bayreuth include philosophy and economics, business administration and engineering, and English and American studies. There are also dual language courses at Bayreuth and a number of courses taught in English.

Doctoral programmes are also offered at Bayreuth, and graduates can make use of the various facilities such as the university’s botanical garden or its media centre.

In 2016 Thomas Triller, a doctoral researcher at the university, was honoured for his creation of material samples which were to be delivered to the International Space Station. There is also a dedicated programme in place for current professionals who wish to base their studies around their work life.

A quarter of doctoral researchers at Bayreuth are international students. Ten universities in China are established partners of the university, and the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies is associated with over thirty universities on the continent. There is also a dedicated International Office to help all foreign students adapt to life in Germany.

Some notable graduates of Bayreuth are hockey player Maximilian Müller, lawyer Andreas Voßkuhle and Auma Obama, half sister of US President Barack Obama.

The city of Bayreuth is located in southwest Germany, in the historic county of Bavaria. As well as hot summers and cool winters, Bavaria is known for traditions such as the now global beer festival Oktoberfest and alpine skiing. A popular skiing location is the Fichtel mountains, which are 50km to the east of Bayreuth.

Research Fellow on Machine Learning for Perceptual Quality Prediction of Spatial Music

The role Applications are invited for a Research Fellow (RF) position for 12 months within the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), University of Surrey, UK, to work on building machine learning and AI models for perceptual quality prediction of spatial music.  The post is funded by a leading industry partner. The focus will be to develop machine learning and AI models and signal processing algorithms for perceptual quality prediction and rating of songs reproduced using 3D rendering algorithms. About you The post-holder is expected to have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in machine learning, spatial audio, audio signal processing, audio perception, audio quality assessment, or a related area in electronic engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or statistics. Preference will be given to those who have experience on machine learning/AI, spatial audio, but candidates who have experience in audio perception and signal processing are welcome to apply. The post-holder is expected to have strong analytical and programming skills in Python, Matlab or C/C++. The post-holder will also collaborate with other team members, such as the Research Fellow who focuses on listening tests and data curation. The post-holder will be based in CVSSP, and work under the direction of the Principal Investigator Prof Wenwu Wang, and in collaboration with the industrial partner. CVSSP is an International Centre of Excellence for research in Audio-Visual Machine Perception and AI, with over 180 researchers. The Centre has state-of-the-art audio and video capture and analysis facilities supporting research in real-time video and audio processing and visualisation. CVSSP has a compute facility with 300 GPUs and >2PB of high-speed secure storage. The research will focus on the development and use of machine learning and advanced molecular dynamics techniques for molecular simulations and to study Nucleic acids structures and their interactions. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, or related field, and is less than 5 after his receiving his their PhD. years , with extensive experience in the application of molecular dynamics simulations to molecular systems, ideally in both methods and applications. Experience in biomolecular simulations particularly nucleic acid simulations is desirable. An ideal candidate should have a solid background in physics and chemistry, particularly in the area of statistical mechanics with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and excellent record of research accomplishments. Experience with modern sampling techniques such as metadynamics, UFED, path sampling, milestoning methods; machine learning applications in chemistry and biophysics, good computer programming skills, and working knowledge of UNIX, phyton, and shell scripting is highly desired. Experience in molecular simulation softwares and analysis tools such as Gromacs, PLUMED and OpenMM will be very valuable. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge resources in a collaborative research environment between the campuses of New York University and the members of the NYUAD research community. The Role and the Department The role supports the IS Senior Manager (Integrations) to deliver effective integration solutions to the University and is part of the wider Information Services (IS) collection of teams, which underpins the delivery of customer focused information systems and services.
