The University of Bayreuth is located in the city of the same name in Germany. The institution was founded in 1975 with dual goals: a committed international outlook and the development of interdisciplinary research and subjects.
Subjects offered at undergraduate level in Bayreuth include philosophy and economics, business administration and engineering, and English and American studies. There are also dual language courses at Bayreuth and a number of courses taught in English.
Doctoral programmes are also offered at Bayreuth, and graduates can make use of the various facilities such as the university’s botanical garden or its media centre.
In 2016 Thomas Triller, a doctoral researcher at the university, was honoured for his creation of material samples which were to be delivered to the International Space Station. There is also a dedicated programme in place for current professionals who wish to base their studies around their work life.
A quarter of doctoral researchers at Bayreuth are international students. Ten universities in China are established partners of the university, and the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies is associated with over thirty universities on the continent. There is also a dedicated International Office to help all foreign students adapt to life in Germany.
Some notable graduates of Bayreuth are hockey player Maximilian Müller, lawyer Andreas Voßkuhle and Auma Obama, half sister of US President Barack Obama.
The city of Bayreuth is located in southwest Germany, in the historic county of Bavaria. As well as hot summers and cool winters, Bavaria is known for traditions such as the now global beer festival Oktoberfest and alpine skiing. A popular skiing location is the Fichtel mountains, which are 50km to the east of Bayreuth.

The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN EUROPEAN STUDIES for a fixed-term position from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2030, or as agreed The duties of a University Lecturer include providing teaching in accordance with degree requirements of the degree programmes within the Centre of European Studies (CES), supervising and examining theses, conducting research in their academic field, and contributing to the development of the Centre and to its shared responsibilities. Centre for European Studies (CES) is a multidisciplinary research unit within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki, collaborating with other faculties. The Centre advances research and teaching in European Studies, understood broadly as an interdisciplinary field that examines European societies, their interconnections, and the institutions governing cooperation among them through contemporary and historical perspectives. The Centre serves as a host unit for researchers and projects, organises seminars and conferences, and coordinates the international, interdisciplinary Master’s Programme in European and Nordic Studies (ENS). The appointee will teach and supervise students in the ENS programme and contribute to the Centre’s research-led activities. The successful candidate will demonstrate wide-ranging familiarity with and understanding of the multiple subfields of European and EU studies. Teaching Profile The University Lecturer will teach and supervise students in the Master’s Programme in European and Nordic Studies (ENS), coordinated by the Centre for European Studies. Additional duties comprise teaching of other thematic ENS courses, responsibility for one of the programme’s study modules, coordinating of internships and career-supportive activities, supervising and examining master’s theses. Academic study planning (HOPS) guidance for international master’s students constitutes an essential part of the position. In addition, the appointee will participate in academic administration and programme development. The primary language of instruction is English. We are looking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher with experience and expertise in synthetic transition metal chemistry, to be based in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Southampton as part of the group of Prof. Gill Reid (G.Reid@soton.ac.uk). This postdoctoral fellowship is part of the EXPRESS (Exploiting Single Source Precursors for the Electrochemical Growth of Functional 1D and 2D Metal Dichalcogenide Semiconductors) Programme Grant recently announced by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). EXPRESS is a large (£10M) flagship, interdisciplinary research programme over 5-years. It is led jointly by the Universities of Southampton and Warwick, alongside several international and industrial partners, and brings together internationally leading teams from across chemistry, physics and electronic engineering. It aims to deliver a step-change in the understanding and control of electrochemical growth of high-quality mono/few-layer functional transition metal dichalcogenides TMDCs, combining precursor design and synthesis, electrochemistry, solution and surface computation, advanced characterisation and device integration. In addition to the essential disciplinary research skills, candidates should demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for collaborative working, the ability to communicate effectively across disciplines, and well-developed organisational skills. In this role your primary focus will be the synthesis, spectroscopic and structural characterisation of a range of new molecular complexes that contain the pre-assembled metal dichalcogenide (ME2) building block that forms the target TMDC. You will work in close collaboration with the electrochemistry experts who will investigate their effectiveness as single source precursors for the electrodeposition range of high quality semi-conducting and semi-metallic TMDCs. You will be required to be flexible and interact effectively with colleagues across the wider EXPRESS consortium to fulfil the scientific goals of the Programme. The position is offered for 24 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for up to 3 further years. Our facilities allow for the entire scientific workflow—from sample preparation in our chemistry lab and cell culture lab to advanced characterization. Our imaging suite features several microscopes, including a CrestOptics X-Light v3 spinning disk mounted on a fully-automated Nikon Ti2-E, supported by high-end sCMOS cameras (Kinetix, Andor CB2, ORCA-Flash4.0 V3) and biological incubators. For mechanical probing, we utilize our custom-built ShearView linear rheometer and an Anton Paar MCR 702e Space custom rheomicroscope.
