About Universitas Sebelas Maret

Basic information and contact details for Universitas Sebelas Maret

Founded on 11 March 1976, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) is one of Indonesia's leading public universities, strategically located in Surakarta, Central Java—a city renowned as the heart of Javanese culture, creativity, and intellectual heritage. For nearly five decades, UNS has grown into a dynamic institution where education, research, innovation, and community engagement converge to create meaningful impact for Indonesia and the global community.

The university is guided by its historic motto, "Mangesthi Luhur Ambangun Nagara" (Pursuing Noble Ideals to Build the Nation), and inspired by its institutional ethos, "Advancing Human Society while Preserving Noble Values." These principles define the character of UNS, where scientific excellence is pursued alongside integrity, cultural wisdom, sustainability, and social responsibility. Through the Tridharma of Higher Education—education, research, and community engagement—UNS prepares graduates, develops knowledge, and delivers solutions that respond to contemporary challenges while remaining deeply rooted in Indonesian values.

Today, UNS is recognised as one of Indonesia's most progressive universities in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Based on the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings, UNS is ranked as Indonesia's leading institution for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), demonstrating leadership in inclusive education, sustainable agriculture, responsible governance, community empowerment, and economic development. Sustainability is not an independent agenda but a principle embedded throughout teaching, research, institutional governance, and community partnerships.

Education with Purpose

UNS offers a comprehensive portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, specialist, and vocational programmes spanning science, engineering, medicine, social sciences, arts, education, agriculture, economics, business, law, and emerging interdisciplinary fields.

Learning at UNS extends well beyond the classroom. Students participate in research projects, entrepreneurship programmes, industry placements, community engagement, international mobility, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation challenges that encourage them to translate knowledge into practical solutions. Supported by accomplished academics and an increasingly international learning environment, graduates develop the intellectual agility, ethical leadership, and intercultural competencies required to succeed in an increasingly complex world.

Research Driving Real-World Impact

Research is one of UNS's defining strengths. The university promotes interdisciplinary and collaborative research addressing global priorities, including renewable energy, digital transformation, health sciences, artificial intelligence, food security, biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage, climate resilience, peace, justice and institutions, economic growth, and sustainable development.

UNS hosts several nationally recognised Centres of Excellence that connect scientific discovery with societal needs. The Center of Excellence for Energy Storage (PUI Baterai) plays a strategic role in advancing Indonesia's renewable energy transition and electric vehicle ecosystem. The Fintech Center UNS supports innovation in digital finance and financial inclusion, while the Center for Javanese Studies (Javanologi) preserves, researches, and promotes one of the world's richest cultural traditions through interdisciplinary scholarship.

These research centres strengthen collaboration with government, industry, international universities, and communities, ensuring that research outcomes contribute to technological innovation, evidence-based policymaking, commercialization, and sustainable economic development.

Sustainability in Action

Sustainability is integrated into every dimension of university life. From curriculum design and interdisciplinary research to campus management and community outreach, UNS aligns its institutional development with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Each year, UNS lecturers independently deliver more than 375 community service activities while lecturers and students together deliver more than 8,500 community service activities. These initiatives reach more than 575 villages and sub-districts each year, addressing real social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by local communities.

Beyond its national leadership in SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), the university promotes renewable energy adoption, biodiversity conservation, circular waste management, water stewardship, sustainable transportation, responsible resource management, and environmental education. These commitments have earned continued recognition in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, reflecting UNS's standing as one of Indonesia's leading green campuses.

UNS also manages the Gunung Bromo Educational Forest (KHDTK), a unique living laboratory where students and researchers undertake ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and sustainability research. The forest offers invaluable opportunities for experiential learning while supporting Indonesia's environmental resilience.

Finally, UNS operates its own teaching hospital, RS UNS, which serves the community in healthcare while supporting medical research and the clinical education of future doctors.

An Inclusive and Student-Centred Campus

UNS is committed to creating a campus where excellence and inclusivity go hand in hand. Through its Disability-Friendly Campus initiative and Benteng Pancasila Programme, the university ensures equitable access to education through accessible infrastructure, inclusive classrooms, Braille facilities, assistive technologies, and comprehensive student support services.

Students benefit from modern laboratories, innovation and entrepreneurship centres, collaborative learning spaces, libraries, sports facilities, cultural centres, and the UNS Teaching Hospital, which integrates healthcare services, medical education, clinical research, and community service into a single academic ecosystem. This holistic environment enables students to develop academically, professionally, socially, and personally.

A Globally Connected University

Internationalisation is central to the future of UNS. The university continues to expand strategic partnerships with universities, governments, industries, and international organisations across Asia, Europe, Australia, the Americas, and beyond.

These collaborations create opportunities for student exchange, visiting scholars, joint research, dual-degree programmes, collaborative publications, international internships, and capacity-building initiatives. Through its International Office, UNS provides dedicated support for international students and researchers while fostering a multicultural academic community that values diversity, collaboration, and global citizenship.

As Indonesia continues to play an increasingly important role within the global economy and the Indo-Pacific region, UNS serves as a gateway for international collaboration—connecting global knowledge with local wisdom to address shared challenges and create sustainable solutions.

Whether pursuing internationally recognised education, impactful research, or long-term strategic partnerships, Universitas Sebelas Maret offers an inspiring environment where innovation is driven by purpose, collaboration creates opportunity, and knowledge contributes to a better future. UNS welcomes students, researchers, innovators, and partners from around the world to become part of a university that is shaping the future while preserving the noble values that define its identity.
