About Universitas Medan Area

Basic information and contact details for Universitas Medan Area

The name Universitas Medan Area is not, in fact, a reference to the fact that the university is based in the city of Medan. Instead, it refers to a key battle in the 1945 fight for Indonesian independence, which took place around the city of Medan (where the university is also based).

The university opened in 1983, with five faculties: engineering; agriculture; economics; law; and social and political sciences. To these were later added three more: the faculties of psychology, science and technology, and Islamic religion. Seventeen undergraduate degree programmes are offered across these faculties.

The university is home to two campus mosques, with active congregations and regular religious lectures. The campus also houses a food court, selling snacks and full meals, such as smashed chicken and fried rice. More unusual campus facilities include a butterfly house (located next to the tissue-culture and waste processing lab) and a compost house, which processes crop residue, straw and livestock waste into organic fertiliser.

A five-storey dormitory is located near to the campus conservation forest park. It offers a range of rooms, from four-person, two-bunkbed dorms to rooms with a double bed.
