Located in Campos dos Goytacazes in Rio de Janeiro, the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro was founded by Professor Darcy Ribeiro in 1991. The institute was the first Brazilian university to have a faculty made up of 100 per cent PhD professors. The university is made up of two campuses: the Leonel Brizola campus and the Macaé campus. The Leonel Brizola campus is where the rectory and the main teaching units are located as well as a number of the university campuses. The Macaé campus is where the two laboratories of the Science and Technology Centre are located. The university offers 18 undergraduate courses and two degrees offered at a distance through the Distance Education Center of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The university also offers 13 postgraduate programmes. The subjects covered at the university include human and social sciences, biology, civil engineering, maths, veterinary medicine and chemistry among others. The university is made up of several multidisciplinary laboratories including. The Science and Technology Centre (CCT), the Centre for Agricultural Sciences and Technologies (CCTA), the Centre for Biosciences and Biotechnology (CBB), and the Human Science Centre (CCH).

Research Area Earth Observation Artificial Intelligence Climate Change Urban and Territorial Sustainability Water–Energy–Food Nexus Position Description African Research Center on Air Quality and Climate (ARC_AIR) of UM6P invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position within an interdisciplinary research program focusing on the integrated analysis of climate change, urbanization, resource systems, and territorial performance, with a particular emphasis on Morocco, Africa, and semi-arid to arid regions. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of Earth Observation, geospatial analytics, artificial intelligence, climate and sustainability science, aiming to develop predictive, decision-oriented, and operational frameworks for climate-resilient and sustainable territories. The group develops the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART and studies all aspects of transport in the atmosphere, ranging from greenhouse gases to pollutants, water vapour and heat, and uses inverse modelling techniques to determine sources of greenhouse gases, radionuclides, or air pollutants. In the framework of the new research platform SPACETRACE (Pollution of the Atmosphere by a Rapidly Growing Space Industry) four new PhD positions are available, of which one is within our group and will focus on the transport of space-industry emissions in the atmosphere.  Your personal sphere of influence: We seek a highly motivated PhD student, who will carry out Lagrangian transport model simulations with FLEXPART, of the emissions originating from rocket launches as well as re-entering space objects. The PhD student will characterize transport patterns and timescales and will investigate transport differences between gaseous tracers (e.g., nitrogen oxides) and aerosols of different sizes (e.g., alumina particles). The student will work closely with the other three PhD students who will work on related topics. Your future tasks: Quantify the emissions caused by the space industry; Characterize the circulation patterns relevant for the emissions, and quantify concentrations and residence times of the emissions in different parts of the atmosphere (e.g., mesosphere, stratosphere, troposphere), Further develop the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART as required for this application; Perform case studies and compare simulation results with measurement data, e.g., as obtained by aircraft measurements in the stratosphere; Publish your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals; Teach classes within our bachelor or master programs in Meteorology (independently / within the scope of the provisions of the collective agreement); Strengthen the collaborative culture of our team and the Department.
