Does this sound like you? Then join our accomplished team! Setting: The University of Vienna seeks to fill a position of University Assistant (prae doc) at the Faculty of Computer Science. The selected prae doc will become part of the Research Group Workflow Systems and Technology (WST) and will work towards obtaining a doctorate degree (PhD) under the supervision of Prof. Bernhard Lutz. The position is to be filled as soon as possible. The new work group by Prof. Bernhard Lutz within the research group Workflow Systems and Technology has a broad research focus on topics of business analytics and operations research. The interdisciplinary group aims to develop novel approaches for solving complex decision problems and explaining human behavior in the usage of information technology. For this purpose, the group applies methods from reinforcement learning, explainable AI, natural language processing, and lab experiments. Applications should hence be interested in one or more of the aforementioned topics and/or methods. The particular topics will be determined based on the candidate’s skills and preferences. Given its interdisciplinary focus, the group collaborates with researchers from both, computer science and business administration. The successful candidate can hence build on a strong network of fellow researchers with a strong knowledge of business analytics and operations research topics. The Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Vienna has world-leading researchers in Computer Science who pursue basic as well as applied research. The selected praedoc will also become part of the UniVie Doctoral School Computer Science (DoCS), which builds an essential framework to foster excellence in research and teaching. The DoCS aims to provide young researchers with the broad knowledge and experience they need to conduct computer science research at the highest level. It trains doctoral students to solve fundamental as well as applied research questions of high relevance. The appointment is for 4 years, whereby the employment contract is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months. The Centre for Health AI Research and Translation (CHART) was established in late 2025 under the LKS Faculty of Medicine to provide a unique platform that facilitates innovative health AI research and accelerates the translation of clinically validated AI and big data systems in a sustainable and trusted manner. We are now seeking a highly motivated researcher with strong technical expertise and a demonstrated interest in developing, evaluating, and translating AI-enabled digital health solutions. The appointee will contribute to interdisciplinary research projects involving academic, clinical, technical, and industry partners, and lead the planning, development, delivery, and operation of CHART’s technical platforms and digital solutions, ensuring they are robust, scalable, secure, and aligned with the Centre’s strategic objectives. Key responsibilities include: Conducting and supporting high-quality research in health AI, digital health, clinical informatics, research-support systems, or related areas. Leading the technical team and providing day-to-day supervision, guidance, and performance management. Overseeing and contributing to the design, development, deployment, and evaluation of AI-enabled digital health platforms, applications, databases, and related infrastructure. Ensuring system security, reliability, performance, scalability, and compliance with relevant data governance and privacy requirements. Working closely with academic, clinical, technical, and industry collaborators to advance translational health AI research. Translating clinical, operational, and research needs into practical technical solutions, prototypes, and implementation plans. Coordinating technical resources, project timelines, and deliverables across multiple stakeholders. Providing strategic technical input to support the Centre’s growth and long-term development. Managing integration with external systems, devices, APIs, and platforms as required. Reviewing and improving development workflows, documentation, deployment processes, and technical standards. Working closely with academic, clinical, technical, and industry collaborators to advance translational health AI research. Presenting research findings, progress updates, technical proposals, and system recommendations to internal and external stakeholders. For appointment as RAP, candidates will additionally be expected to demonstrate the ability to develop an independent research agenda, lead research initiatives, secure external funding, and publish in high-quality venues. Applicants should have: A Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Health Informatics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related discipline. Your personal sphere of influence: The Department of Linguistics is a sub-unit of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, consisting of four main branches (Applied Linguistics, General Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, Psycholinguistics). The announced four-year position for a university assistant (PhD position) will be associated with the branch of Applied Linguistics (chaired by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Spitzmüller). Applied Linguistics deals with language in social context and practice. In the context of the Viennese Institute, the discipline primarily covers sociolinguistics, metapragmatics, discourse analysis, multimodal text and media research (the main foci of the chair) as well as conversation analysis, institutional communication, multilingualism, language policy and pragmatics.
