Universidad Tecnica de Ambato

Universidad Técnica de Ambato is a public university located in Ambato, central Ecuador, founded in 1969. Its origins can be traced back to an institute established in 1959 by local accounting professionals, which became an officially recognised higher-education institution in 1963. When the university was formally created by Ecuador’s National Congress in 1969, it initially offered programmes in administration and management, auditing and accounting, and industrial technology.

Ambato is the capital of Tungurahua Province, located in Ecuador’s central Andean valley. Its academic activities are distributed across three principal campuses. Huachi is the largest and accommodates faculties including engineering, architecture, education, business and law; Ingahurco is home to the Faculty of Health Sciences; while Querochaca, in nearby Cevallos, hosts the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and medical laboratories.

It is organised into 10 faculties including food science and biotechnology, business administration, agricultural sciences, civil and mechanical engineering, systems and industrial engineering, health sciences, design and architecture, accounting and auditing, education, and jurisprudence and social sciences. It also offers courses in engineering and technology, agriculture, medicine and health, business, law and education, alongside continuing, distance, undergraduate and postgraduate study.

Culture is an important aspect of university life, promoted through UTA’s University Cultural Centre, which offers workshops and activities in theatre, dance and music. Particularly notable is its traditional zancos workshop, where students learn to construct and perform on stilts, a popular Ecuadorian cultural expression.
