Description The Opportunity New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks an accomplished scholar and visionary leader to serve as its next Dean of the Division of Social Science. The Division The Social Science Division is home to over 80 full-time faculty, including a Nobel Laureate in Economics and a vibrant community of post-doctoral researchers in Economics, Political Science, Social Research & Public Policy, Business Organizations & Society, and Legal Studies. The Division offers five undergraduate majors as well as graduate programs. Faculty conduct world-class research that is both theoretically rigorous and globally engaged, with collaborations spanning every continent and close ties to policy and practice in the UAE and beyond. The Division’s research strength is internationally recognized - Economics at NYUAD ranks 4th in Asia in Research Papers in Economics, and Political Science ranks 6th globally according to a recent study. The Dean will have a unique opportunity to capitalize on this momentum: building on the Division’s existing strengths in graduate education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the global and local visibility of its research and teaching. About NYU Abu Dhabi Founded in partnership with New York University and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, NYUAD is an extraordinary achievement in global higher education. The Role The Dean reports to the Provost and serves as a key member of NYUAD’s senior leadership team. As the Division’s chief academic officer, the Dean will provide strategic leadership for its faculty, curricula, and research agenda, championing excellence and innovation in both research and pedagogy. The role also carries significant responsibility for fostering an accessible and collaborative academic community and for representing the Division’s strengths to partners within and beyond NYU. As part of the senior administration, the Dean must work effectively and collegially with other deans as well as academic and administrative leaders. In addition to engaging with members of the Division of Social Science, they must also be able to work with faculty across the institution. The Dean must be committed to two-way communication, to fostering trust, and to building community at the campus, national, and international levels. Your personal sphere of influence: Two predoctoral university assistant positions within the research team of Professor Folker Hanusch are currently vacant. The positions are situated within the Journalism Studies Center at the Department of Communication, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. The JSC has built a very good reputation in journalism studies over the past ten years, which is characterized by evidence-based work on a range of transformative developments in journalism at an international and national level. The Journalism Studies Center’s current research agenda focuses on 1) the comparative analysis of journalism cultures, 2) the influence of peripheral actors on journalism, 3) the audience expectations of news and trust in journalism, 4) diversity and activism in journalism, and 5) the role of subfields like lifestyle journalism, indigenous journalism, participative and constructive journalism. Interest in one or more of these areas, or in related topics, is an advantage for an application, but at a minimum a clear interest in journalism studies should exist. The team currently consists, in addition to the professorship, of one tenure-track professor, one senior lecturer position, one postdoctoral researcher, two prae-docs, one student assistant, and one administrative staff member. What characterizes us as a team is a highly collegial way of working, curiosity about new phenomena in journalism studies, and a commitment to internationally excellent research. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching and administration, which means: You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the area of journalism studies. You contribute to the organization of meetings, conferences, and symposia and support project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding. You publish in academic journals, and present the results at relevant (international) conferences. You work on your dissertation and its completion in the area of journalism studies under the supervision of Professor Folker Hanusch. We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. You teach courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration. This is part of your personality: You have obtained a completed MA / Magister degree in Communication and Journalism Studies or a related discipline. The EIC-funded project’s objective is to enhance laser technology performance through creating functionalised REDS thin-disks as new optical components for innovative-lasers applications. We’re looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to be part of our team to advance our Rapid Pulsed Laser Deposition (RPLD) technology and ultimately develop a new class of active mirror to underpin the next generation of thin-disk lasers. What You’ll Do: innovate: develop scalable RPLD processes to fabricate REDS active mirrors collaborate: work with a dynamic team and engage in interdisciplinary research experiment: gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge physical-vapour-deposition fabrication techniques, lasers, and honing your practical skills explore: help develop a deeper understanding of how to produce a high-quality REDS crystals and scale to practical dimensions. We’re seeking a capable and resourceful postdoctoral candidate eager to dive into laboratory work to develop RPLD methods to create these novel optically active sapphire elements.
