This isn't just another incremental AI project; we are pioneering a Physics-Informed Multimodal High-Resolution Foundation Model. You will be at the intersection of deep learning and atmospheric sciences, working within the prestigious and word-leading ecosystem of Surrey's PAI, CVSSP and GCARE, under the leadership of Assoc Prof Erick Sperandio.

Your role will be: 


	Architect the Future of AI for Environmental Sciences: Design and pre-train a novel, task-agnostic, multimodal, high-resolution and physics-informed Foundation Model (FM) for air quality prediction that fuses heterogeneous data, from satellite imagery and surface sensors to meteorological grids and emissions inventories, and evaluates the impacts of air pollution on people’s health.
	Bridge AI and Atmospheric Physics: Move beyond the "black box" by embedding physical constraints (such as advection-diffusion equations) directly into the model architecture to ensure scientific consistency, interpretability and trustworthiness.
	Push the Resolution Limit: Implement state-of-the-art super-resolution and downscaling techniques to translate coarse global data into street-level, actionable insights.
	Solve Real-World Grand Challenges: Fine-tune the pretrained FM for critical downstream applications, including early-warning systems for wildfires and simulating urban air-quality mitigation scenarios to inform government policy through a web-based application for FMAI4Air proof-of-concept.
	Leverage High-Performance Computing: Pretrain and fine-tune the models on world-leading HPC infrastructure, including Surrey’s AI@Surrey and the national Isambard-AI HPC.
	Collaborate Nationally and Globally: You will work alongside a powerhouse consortium including Imperial College London, the University of Manchester, and NTNU (Norway), as well as with consortium partners from academia including IAG-USP (Brazil), NC Climate Office at NCSU (USA), Chiba University (Japan), from industry including NVIDIA and WSP Global, and from government such as Guildford Borough Council. 


About you


	Expertise in designing and training large-scale Deep Learning architectures (e.g., Transformers, Mamba, or similar spatiotemporal models).
	Proven experience in multimodal data fusion (handling a mix of time-series, imagery, and tabular data).
	Strong proficiency in PyTorch and Tensorflow, and experience deploying models on HPC clusters and on the edge for fast and efficient inference.
	Expertise in developing and deploying Web applications that will be used to operationalise FMAI4Air models for policy and decision making.
	A solid mathematical foundation in calculus and linear algebra, with the ability to implement physics-informed constraints into neural networks’ loss functions.
	A track record of publishing high-quality research in top-tier AI or environmental science conferences/journals.
	Commitment to deliver high-quality research and innovation outcomes, including publishing papers in top-tier venues, and support research, dissemination, communication and management activities.

The Position

Undertake research and instrumentation development in Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics, with a particular focus on the ULTIMATE Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO) system for the Subaru Telescope and the Laser Tomography Adaptive Optics (LTAO) system for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT).

Contribute to the design, development, integration and testing of advanced Adaptive Optics instrumentation, working collaboratively with researchers and engineers at ANU and with national and international partners. Your activities will include independent and collaborative research, publication and dissemination of results, instrumentation development, student supervision and outreach. You will also have opportunities to contribute to the development of new research directions and external funding.

The Person

The successful candidate will have a PhD in physics, astronomy, engineering or a related discipline and demonstrated expertise relevant to adaptive optics and instrumentation development, such as Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics, wavefront sensing or real-time computing. They will also have a strong record of research demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and collaboration.

We highly value experience in the design, development, fielding or operation of adaptive optics systems on large astronomical telescopes, as well as knowledge of project management and systems engineering. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator and collaborative team member, able to work across disciplinary and institutional boundaries, contribute to student supervision and engage with the broader research community.

The School

The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) is a world-leading centre for astronomical research and education at ANU, based at the historic Mount Stromlo Observatory in Canberra. RSAA conducts research spanning the breadth of astronomy and astrophysics, supported by world-class facilities, international collaborations and a strong focus on research-led education. The School has a long-standing strength in astronomical instrumentation, with the Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) providing a unique environment for the design, development, manufacture, assembly, integration and testing of advanced instruments for ground-based astronomy and space science.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Vienna is looking for a Senior Lecturer (m/f/d) in the field of biochemistry with a focus on nutritional sciences.

The position is initially a fixed-term contract for 4 years. In case of positive evaluation at the end of the fixed-term period of 4 years, conversion to a permanent position is possible. The 20-hour-per-week workload includes a combination of academic and instructive teaching.

The position is located at the Department of Nutritional Sciences, which is part of the Faculty of Life Sciences. As a Senior Lecturer, you will primarily teach on the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in the field of nutritional sciences, with a focus on biochemistry, and contribute to the further development of scientifically based, research-driven teaching.
Our focus is on student-oriented, skills-based and research-driven teaching that links scientific findings with current societal challenges in the field of nutrition and health.

The 20-hour-per-week position involves a teaching load of approximately 3 semester hours per week of academic teaching and approximately 8 semester hours per week of instructive teaching.

Your future tasks:


	Planning, performing and further developing of courses in nutritional sciences with a focus on biochemistry (lectures, practical courses, seminars) at Bachelor’s and Master’s level
	Designing, organizing and supervising of laboratory practical courses, including instructing students in experimental techniques
	Ensuring laboratory and occupational safety (SOPs, safety briefings, quality standards, management of equipment and chemicals)
	Developing of innovative teaching and assessment formats (e.g. blended learning, e-learning, competence-based assessment)
	Contributing to the development of new (digitally aided) teaching concepts and to module coordination
	Providing subject-specific guidance to tutors and practical instructors
	Collaborating with teaching and research teams; carrying out administrative tasks related to teaching operations


What we expect:

About the Role

This position is part of ARC Discovery Project "Health, Biological Fitness and Environmental Diversity".

The appointee will work with Dr Bourrat (Macquarie University, Philosophy), Professor Raubenheimer (University of Sydney, Charles Perkins Centre), Emeritus Professor Griffiths (University of Sydney & Macquarie University, Philosophy), and collaborators to develop a framework for understanding how the organism-environment interface shapes biological fitness, adaptation, and health.

The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of the project in collaboration with the research team. This will include:


	Developing an integrative framework for different measures of biological fitness.
	Developing a framework for understanding the role of the environment in explanations of adaptation.
	Exploring the implications of these frameworks for understanding health.


The research will involve close collaboration between philosophy and biological sciences and requires expertise at the intersection of philosophy of biology and evolutionary biology.

The position will be based in the Theory and Methods in Bioscience group, led by Dr Bourrat within the Philosophy Discipline, and will also be affiliated with the University of Sydney's Charles Perkins Centre.

About the Role

The Senior Lecturer in Surveying in the Surveying Section is a key academic position responsible for the practical delivery of foundational surveying skills to undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Surveying and Bachelor of Geographical Information Science programs. The role requires a Master’s degree in surveying or a related discipline and recent professional experience in land surveying.

The Senior lecturer will be the coordinator of subjects delivered by the surveying section and will be expected to develop and deliver: lecture materials, practicals, assessments and examinations. The lecturer will also be expected to coordinate student field work and supervise student final year projects. A strong emphasis is placed on mentoring students and supervision of fieldwork activities.

  Primary Responsibilities


	Course delivery, supervision and mentoring

	
		Develop, deliver and examine subjects offered by the Surveying Section
		Run field work activities during the annual field camSupervise student final year projects and provide mentoring for students

  Qualification & Experience


	Citizenship: Be a PNG, PICT or Commonwealth citizen.
	Education: Bachelor’s degree in Surveying (preferably from PNGUoT) or international equivalent. Master’s degree (by coursework or research) in Surveying or closely related discipline.
	Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years full-time equivalent professional experience with GNSS, cadastral, engineering, or topographic surveys.
	Licensing:
	
		Registered Surveyor (PNG, PICT or Commonwealth jurisdiction) is preferred.
	
	


Key Competencies:


	High level written and spoken competency in English
	Demonstrate proficiency with total stations, levels, and theodolites.
	Demonstrate proficiency with GNSS surveying, laser scanning and UAVs (desirable but not essential).
	Ability and willingness to teach, mentor, and supervise students in practical settings.
	Strong sense of responsibility, time management, and interpersonal skills.
	Commitment to safety protocols and professional field standards.


Desirable Attributes:


	Familiarity with Surveying software, GNSS software, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or GIS software.
	Previous experience in a teaching or training capacity.
	Willingness to work flexible hours during extended fieldwork exercises.
	Open to pursuing PhD study on a part-time basis, if desired.

Base Salary:


	Senior Lecturer : K66,060 – K80,740 per annum
	Domestic Market Allowance:  K22, 683 – K40,199 per annum
	International Market Allowance: K88,058 – K107,159 per annum
