Your personal sphere of influence: As a University Assistant (Praedoc), you will complement the research team around Univ.-Prof. Dr. Philipp Grohs. Our ideal candidate has a strong interest in Applied Mathematics, possesses solid and profound background knowledge in Numerics, Functional Analysis, Stochastic Analysis, or Statistics, can easily integrate into our team, independently contribute to current research, and work with responsibility for results. You should already have significant programming experience. Additional knowledge in High-Performance Computing or Machine Learning is an advantage. The start of the contract is the 1st of September 2026 or later, the exact starting date is negotiable. The duration of employment is 4 years from the start of the contract. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means: Collaboration and research in the field of Mathematical Data Sciences: Development of own solutions as part of the research group of Prof. Grohs. Conclusion of a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months is expected. Membership in the Vienna School of Mathematics and active participation in its activities will be required. lnterdisciplinary Collaboration: Willingness to participate in international and interdisciplinary research with applied researchers*. Collaboration in teaching and administration:o Independent participation in the administration of the institute, teaching and research.o Independent participation in and teaching of courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. Required Qualifications/Position Requirement: Completed diploma or master's degree in mathematics or a related field before the contract starts (e.g., statistics or Computer Science). Experience in scientific writing and research methods (copy of the Master's thesis, as well as List of publications and presentations, if applicable). High scientific qualification in numerical methods and scientific computing. Didactic skills and qualification as well as experience in e-learning. Excellent programming skills and their applications in Python, Julia or C++. Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken. You are a team player with high social and communication skills. You are goal-oriented and have a high motivation to strive for scientific excellence. What we offer: Employment: The employment duration is 4 years. lnitially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration. Fixed-term contract and adequate salary: The basic salary corresponds to the collective agreement for employees of the universities according to § 48 VwGr. 81 lit b basic level (praedoc): EUR 3.776,10 on a full-time basis (14 times per year). The actual salary is finally determined depending on professional experience and qualification. The gross salary covers all benefits of the employee in quantitative and qualitative terms (= all-in payment). Your personal sphere of influence: The Department of Linguistics is a sub-unit of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, consisting of four main branches (Applied Linguistics, General Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, Psycholinguistics). The announced four-year position for a university assistant (PhD position) will be associated with the branch of Applied Linguistics (chaired by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Spitzmüller). Applied Linguistics deals with language in social context and practice. In the context of the Viennese Institute, the discipline primarily covers sociolinguistics, metapragmatics, discourse analysis, multimodal text and media research (the main foci of the chair) as well as conversation analysis, institutional communication, multilingualism, language policy and pragmatics. Applied Linguistics is conceived as an empirically driven, theory-building discipline which is also participating and taking stand in public discourse on linguistic matters. In the context of the Department of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics is furthermore committed to the common institutional goal of exploring language in a comprehensive sense (as a system, competence and social practice). Description The Smart Materials Lab (Panče Naumov Group) at the Division of Science and Mathematics, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a highly motivated post-doctoral candidate in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for materials science, with an emphasis on structure-property-relationships, materials optimization, materials under extreme conditions, and generative AI. Candidates must possess substantial experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, specifically in AI-driven materials discovery, machine learning applications for materials, or generative AI related to materials. The successful candidate will independently lead a project focused on developing generative AI models to establish structure-property relationships for materials discovery. This individual will be expected to collaborate closely with the project team and coordinate efforts with experimentalists from the Smart Materials Lab (SML) and the Center for Smart Engineering Materials (CSEM) at NYUAD. The results of this work are anticipated to be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at prominent conferences. We offer unique opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations, organization of scientific workshops, and attendance at conferences. Key qualifications include a PhD in a relevant field, expertise in AI/ML (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Python), interest in materials applications, and a strong publication record. The position is for two years, with the possibility of renewal, subject to mutual agreement. The successful candidate is also expected to play an active role in other projects and activities within the Smart Materials Lab and assist in supervising undergraduate or PhD students.
