The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of UNIVERSITY TEACHER IN ECOLOGY, EVOLUTIONARY AND CONSERVATION BIOLOGY This fixed position from 1.8.2026 (or as agreed) – 31.5.2030 is based in the Department of Organismal and Evolutionary Biology, which is one of the three Departments in the Faculty and located on the Viikki Campus. Tasks Teaching and teaching-related tasks account for the majority (70-90%) of the annual working time. The primary focus will be on contributing to the curriculum of the Bachelor’s Programme in Biology, and the Master’s programmes in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB)—an international programme attracting students from Finland and abroad, and in Nature, Society, and Environmental Solutions (LYYRA)—a new programme predominantly taught in Finnish for national students. Teaching topics will include fundamental ecology and evolutionary biology, from species determination to eco-evolutionary aspects of biodiversity changes and conservation strategies, as well as quantitative analysis methods and examples of modern approaches in fundamental research. The university teacher selected for the position will be responsible teacher and contribute teaching on selected courses, including field and lab courses, organize and coordinate internships within and outside the University of Helsinki, and assist professors and university lecturers with course preparation and coordination. Key duties will include student guidance and tutoring, bachelor’s and master’s thesis supervision and evaluation. We expect the candidate to be able to work collaboratively, contributing to joint teaching initiatives across our faculty's degree programmes, and to foster a learning environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. The applicant should also have the ability to create and foster connections to relevant work life partners and research groups to increase the availability of open internship positions. Selection criteria According to the University of Helsinki's administrative regulations, applicants must have a relevant higher education degree, and teaching experience. Additional merits include a doctoral degree and pedagogical training. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, emphasis will be placed on proficiency and teaching experience in ecology, evolutionary biology and biodiversity conservation, demonstrated pedagogical competence, supervision of bachelor and master’s theses, and ability to advance the use of interactive and student-centered education methods. Expertise in blended learning approaches that incorporate modern digital tools are regarded as an asset. The successful candidate should have good knowledge of cutting-edge approaches in a research topic relevant to study biodiversity at the micro (genes and molecules) or macro (populations and species) scale. Teaching skills The overall teaching skills of a university teacher must be at least at a good level. Applicants' teaching skills will be assessed in relation to the curriculum of the Bachelor’s Programme in Biology, Master’s Programmes in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and in Nature, Society and Environmental Solutions. Applicants' teaching skills will be assessed using the faculty's assessment matrix and a teaching demonstration. Language skills The university requires that those holding teaching and research positions must be proficient in the language of instruction, which in this case is both English and Finnish. Salary The salary for this position is based on levels 4–5 of the university salary system's teaching and research staff requirement level chart. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid. The total salary is 3400-4200 eur/mo. Job Description LANGUAGE CENTRE Assistant Lecturer (English Section) (25260637) Responsibilities: The appointees are expected to: Teach core and elective credit-bearing courses, language enhancement courses, workshops and services, and other English courses assigned by the Language Centre; Assist in the design and development of course syllabuses, teaching materials and assessment tasks, as well as the creation of self-access language learning materials; Assist in organising events, workshops and extracurricular activities; and Perform other duties assigned by the Language Centre. Requirements: Applicants should have a good postgraduate qualification in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, TESOL, or a related field, and native or native-like proficiency in English; A minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience at the tertiary level is required; Possession of a postgraduate teaching certificate or diploma and a proven record of excellence in teaching would be an advantage; Expertise in teaching English for Academic or Specific Purposes and integrating AI and e-learning into course materials is expected; and Candidates with strong insight into pedagogical innovations and the ability to implement them in projects and funding applications will be an asset to the Language Centre. Job description: We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher specialized in electronics and embedded systems, capable of designing and deploying innovative IoT solutions for research projects such as air quality monitoring, water leak detection and energy monitoring of electric vehicle batteries. The candidate will need to master sensor technologies, embedded systems, and communication protocols, while integrating real-time data into cloud platforms to develop reliable, secure, and scalable solutions. Main tasks and responsibilities Design, develop, and test IoT solutions for air quality monitoring and electric vehicle battery tracking. Integrate environmental and energy sensors with real-time data collection and analysis systems. Deploy prototypes in the field and optimize their performance based on feedback. Guarantee the reliability, security and scalability of the IoT solutions developed. Work closely with research teams to produce usable data and contribute to scientific publications. Contribute to scientific publications and disseminate results to decision-makers and communities. Qualifications required PhD in one of the following fields: electronics and embedded systems, telecommunications, industrial computing, electrical engineering or equivalent. Expertise in the design, prototyping and deployment of IoT solutions for environmental and energy applications. Solid knowledge of embedded electronics and microcontrollers (Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, etc.). Expertise in developing sensors for air quality (PM2.5, CO2, Nox, etc.) and energy monitoring (voltages, currents, battery charge/discharge cycles); Proficiency in languages commonly used in IoT, such as C/C++, Python, and JavaScript. Expertise in firmware development and optimization for microcontrollers and embedded systems. Knowledge of IoT communication protocols (MQTT, CoAP, LoRaWAN, Zigbee, BLE, Wi-Fi, LTE, etc.). Experience in integrating IoT systems with cloud platforms such as AWS IoT, Azure IoT, Google Cloud IoT, ThingsBoard, etc. Familiarity with Edge Computing architecture to process data locally before transferring it to the cloud. Implementation of pipelines to collect real-time data from IoT sensors. Expertise in IoT-oriented databases (e.g., InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, Firebase, etc.). Knowledge of data visualization tools (e.g., Grafana, Tableau, etc.). Personal and organizational skills Ability to solve complex problems related to the design and optimization of IoT systems.
