About Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences

Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences is located in Hachioji, Tokyo in Japan, and was founded in 1880 as the Tokyo Pharmaceutics School, Japan’s first private education institution to train pharmacists.

As the name suggests, there are two school within the university: pharmacy and life sciences. The school of life sciences was established in 1994, aiming to conduct research in molecular and cellular biotechnology and life sciences. The school of pharmacy aims to produce skilled pharmacists through a six-year curriculum, equipping its students for work after university.

The undergraduate school has six departments across these schools: clinical pharmacy, clinical applied pharmacy, clinical biopharmacy, molecular life sciences, applied life sciences, and medical sciences. There is also a graduate school that has three departments, offering doctoral and master's level programmes to students in both schools.

There are several facilities at the university, including the Drug Rationale Research Development Centre, home to the research equipment such as a magnetically sealed room, calibration laboratory and information processing laboratory. The university is also home to one of the largest medicinal plant gardens in Japan, created for use in pharmaceutical education and research.

Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences established a sister school relationship with Tokyo Medical University in 1992, allowing for education and research information exchange, joint educational programmes and research projects.

Tokyo is one of the world’s largest cities in the world and provides multiple opportunities for students as well as a range of things for students to see and do. The city is known for its Cherry Blossom Festival, known as Hanami, a party marking the start of the season, seeing the city change colour with the trees.
