About Tharaka University
Basic information and contact details for Tharaka University
Tharaka University was originally established in 2015, as a subsidiary campus of Chuka University in the town of Gatunga, on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya. In 2022, it was awarded its own university charter; it now has three campuses of its own. Its two subsidiary campuses are 30-60km from the main campus.
Tharaka University offers more than 50 undergraduate courses, delivered across seven faculties: education; humanities and social sciences; physical sciences, engineering and technology; business studies; law; life sciences and natural resources; and nursing and health sciences.
The main campus houses six hostels, which can accommodate 800 – a fraction of the 15,000 students at the university. Recognising this shortfall, the university is building new hostels to house 1,200 additional students. And it works with private landlords to ensure that students are accommodated safely elsewhere.
Sports on offer range from football and rugby to basketball and taekwondo. A staff friendly tournament pits teams from different universities against one another in football, netball and volleyball. Students are also able to join religious societies, such as the Christian Union or Islamic Society.
