Expected Start Date: October 2025 Job Description We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with expertise in vanadium and rare-earth element (REE) recovery, thermodynamic modeling, and materials characterization to join a cutting-edge research team. The project focuses on developing sustainable and optimized processes for vanadium extraction and purification, with the goal of enabling large-scale redox flow battery deployment for energy storage. Scope of Work The successful candidate will work on: Designing and optimizing extraction processes for vanadium from primary and secondary sources (e.g., slags and industrial wastes). Developing purification pathways to produce battery-grade vanadium for energy storage applications. Applying thermodynamic modeling tools (CALPHAD, FactSage) to simulate vanadium phase behavior and guide process improvements. Performing advanced characterization of vanadium-bearing materials to understand their transformation and recovery mechanisms. Evaluating environmental sustainability via Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis. Contributing to the integration of vanadium flows within a circular economy model for battery materials. Key Responsibilities Development and optimization of hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical vanadium recovery strategies. Advanced thermodynamic simulation using CALPHAD-based methods, including phase equilibrium modeling in multi-component systems. Comprehensive use of characterization tools, including: SEM, TEM, HAADF-STEM, XRD, and EDS for micro- and nano-scale phase analysis. LA-ICP-MS for ultra-trace elemental quantification. Investigation of impurity phase removal (e.g., Fe, P, Si, REEs). Environmental and economic evaluation of processes via LCA and techno-economic models. Preparation of high-impact publications and contribution to collaborative proposals. Support of graduate student mentorship and lab coordination. Required Qualifications & Experience PhD in Materials Chemistry, Extractive Metallurgy, or Chemical Engineering with a focus on resource recovery or battery materials. Research experience in metal recovery from slags or mineral concentrates, including both experimental and computational methodologies. Proven proficiency in thermodynamic modeling using FactSage, CALPHAD, and complementary simulation platforms like Aspen Plus. In-depth knowledge of electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and structural analysis methods for complex materials. Familiarity with REE and vanadium chemistry, oxidation states, and redox equilibria. Desirable Competences Prior research on critical metals (e.g., V, Ce, La, Nd) in slag systems. Simulation of monazite and rare-earth phosphate precipitation from multi-component melts. Strong background in slag thermochemistry, particularly oxygen fugacity control and partition coefficient modeling. Experience in integrating modeling with leaching and separation processes for scale-up. Advanced data interpretation using electron diffraction, dendritic growth modeling, and REE behavior in Fe-rich matrices. Competences & Personal Qualities Excellent English communication skills (oral and written). Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Capable of both independent and collaborative interdisciplinary research. Demonstrated ability to lead sub-projects, mentor students, and contribute to scientific dissemination.

Job Description The Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (GSMI) of University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) invites applications for a full-time Professor position in the field of Economic Geology specializing Base and Precious-Metal Deposits, with an expected start as soon as possible. The appointment will be at the Professor level depending on the curriculum vitae and past experience of the successful candidate. This position targets internationally renowned candidates with proven Metallogeny, Ore Mineralogy and Isotope Geochemistry preferably in combined field and analytical research applied to Base and Precious-Metal Deposits (Cu, Ni, Sn, Pb, Zn, Au, Ag, Pt…etc) . We require experience in a range of metallic ore deposits including magmatic, metamorphic and basin-hosted deposits including MVTs, SEDEX and Carlin-type deposits. A strong background on African geology and related metal ores would be a significant advantage. The candidate also should demonstrate excellence in teaching on Bachelor, Master and PhD levels to establish a vibrant program of teaching at the interface between geology and mineral resources. Experience in the acquisition and/or management of third-party funded projects along with excellent written and verbal communication skills and academic self-administration are highly appreciated. The candidate is expected to prove ability to design, coordinate, and organize scientific events and research projects, as well as establish intra and extramural funded research programs. The ability to develop partnerships with industry and state entities is highly desirable. The candidate must have experience working in a team of geoscientists and engineers to advance the understanding of Base and Precious-Metal ore exploration and valorization, and achieve the objectives of grant-funded research programs. Additionally, the candidate should have demonstrated good skills for meeting and conferring with others, and potential for academic and scientific leadership. Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels is also expected. A Ph.D. in Geology of Base and Precious-Metal Deposits, metallogeny, economic geology or related specialization. The successful candidate will investigate the bioleaching capabilities of pre-selected microorganisms and their metabolites. The role also involves identifying and characterizing the dominant bioleaching mechanisms through advanced omics approaches. A significant aspect of the work includes the discovery, engineering, and application of biomolecules—particularly bioligands—that participate in REE complexation and recovery. The candidate will design and implement engineered peptide- and protein-based systems for selective REE capture, explore their immobilization onto synthetic matrices. Key Responsibilities: Apply omics-based approaches (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) to identify and characterize biomolecules involved in REE interaction and recovery. Engineer peptide- and protein-based bioligands with high specificity for selective REE binding and recovery. Develop and test immobilization strategies for biomolecules on various synthetic supports. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including microbiologists, chemical engineers, materials scientists, and omics specialists. Prepare scientific publications, technical reports, and conference presentations. Contribute to grant writing and the development of future research proposals.
