Surabaya University

Surabaya University – known by its catchy acronym, UBaya – was founded in 1966. Originally known as Trisakti University, its name was changed in 1968 to reflect its location in Indonesia’s second-largest city.

Today, the university has four campuses: three in Surabaya and one in the mountain district of Trawas, 65km south of Surabaya.

UBaya offers 40 bachelor’s degree programmes, spread across eight faculties: pharmacy; law; business and economics; engineering; psychology; biotechnology; creative industries; and medicine. Many of these degrees are vocational – for example, product design and management, food-process engineering, and green materials business and technology.

Several single-sex boarding houses provide accommodation for students. These offer a variety of facilities, ranging from a clothesline to a weekly bathroom-cleaning service, via perks such as airconditioning, a private TV, a mattress and white rice.

Student clubs and societies are overseen and run by student activity units. Sports clubs at UBaya include volleyball, basketball, taekwondo, jiujitsu and bridge. There are also music, theatre and debating clubs, as well as Islamic, Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist and Hindu societies.
