The State University of New York College of Technology at Alfred, usually shortened to Alfred State, is a vocational institution in the south of the state.

30 miles north of the border with Pennsylvania, the village of Alfred is 70 miles from Rochester, 80 miles from Buffalo and 100 miles from Niagara Falls and the Canadian border. One of two universities in the village, which is named after Alfred the Great, more than 60% of Alfred State’s student body lives in one of its 13 halls of residence. There are more than 70 courses available overall. A selective institution, Alfred State admits slightly more than half of its applicants. Nearly 50% of its classes contain fewer than 20 students.

Its School of Applied Technology is in Wellsville, slightly south west, where students can take building construction, air conditioning & heating technology, culinary arts and automotive service technician courses. Alfred State also owns a motorsports facility, taking its total land above 1,000 acres.

Alumni include Tom Golisano, formerly owner of the Buffalo Sabres ice hockey team and the Buffalo Bandits (lacrosse), San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Rod Streater (American football) and Brandon Mendelson, a comedian and author who has written extensively about social media.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  The primary responsibility of this role is to support and contribute to an industry innovation research project. The Research Engineer will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, and the research team to develop deep learning-based computer vision algorithms and software for object detection, classification, and segmentation. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project together with the PI, Co-PI, and research team to ensure timely achievement of project deliverables. Undertake the following specific responsibilities in the project: i. Develop, train, and optimise deep learning models for object detection, classification, and segmentation using real-world datasets. ii. Design and implement software modules to integrate the models into a working system prototype. iii. Perform data annotation. iv. Conduct experiments, analyse results, and iterate models for improved accuracy and efficiency. v. Prepare project documentation, technical reports, and academic publications. vi. Collaborate with industry partners and contribute to technology transfer efforts. Job Requirements 1. Possess strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience in: Deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) Deep learning models (e.g., YOLO, U-Net, EfficientNet, ResNet, FPN, Fast R-CNN) Computer vision techniques and algorithms Python and relevant libraries (e.g., PyQt, OpenCV, NumPy, scikit-learn), particularly for developing Windows desktop application software incorporating deep learning models 2. Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic/Software Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s or PhD degree in relevant areas will be advantageous. 3. Familiarity with the following areas is advantageous: Participation in Kaggle competitions, showcasing practical problem-solving and model development skills Model deployment (e.g., ONNX, TensorRT) Edge computing or embedded vision systems (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson Nano) Real-time processing and GPU acceleration Experience working on industry R&D projects Key Competencies Able to build and maintain strong working relationships with team members, stakeholders, and external partners Self-motivated and committed to continuous learning and improvement Proficient in technical writing & presentation, research reporting, and academic publication Possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills Demonstrate initiative and ownership in carrying out tasks independently

Job Purpose The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT. Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules. Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs. Job Requirements Education & Certifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Cybersecurity, Information Security, or related fields from a recognized University. Industry certifications like OSCP, CISSP, or CEH are a plus. Experience: At least 5+ years of experience in security analyst, preferably with exposure to cybersecurity applications. Proven experience as a Certified Security Analyst or in a related role, with a strong understanding of industry best practices, cybersecurity frameworks, IoT Security, OT Security, and Mobile Security. Strong understanding of cryptography, including symmetric and asymmetric cryptographic primitives, protocols, and PQC. Experience with adversarial machine learning techniques and defenses. Clear understanding of information security principles and the cyber technology landscape. Ability to develop and enforce security policies, conduct security awareness training, and stay updated on emerging cyber threats and hacker methodologies. Experience in developing and enhancing frameworks or standard operating procedures (SOPs) for handling cybersecurity incidents in different industries. Soft Skills & Mindset: Passionate about cybersecurity, technically hands-on, willing to learn, and curious about the inner workings of Enterprise/OT/Telecommunications technologies and exploiting their vulnerabilities. Strong interest in supporting research and academic projects, with the ability to adopt and manage new security technologies. Willingness to pursue professional certifications in cybersecurity governance, such as CISSP, OSCP, CSSP (Industry certifications are an added advantage). Actively participate in cybersecurity-related projects or organizations, such as CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team), ISACA, or ISC2.
