Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University is a public open university in Thailand located in Nonthaburi Province near Bangkok. It is the only open university in Thailand and operates a national distance learning system.
It was established in 1978 and began admitting students in 1980, with the aim of expanding access to higher education through flexible learning.
It offers programmes across 12 schools including law, communication arts, human ecology, political science, management science, health sciences, liberal arts, education, economics, agriculture and cooperatives, science and technology, and nursing.
The university has a large student population of over 160,000 undergraduates and several thousand postgraduate students. Its learning model is based on distance education supported by printed materials, digital platforms and regional learning centres.
The campus in Nonthaburi serves as the administrative and academic centre, while teaching is delivered primarily through remote and regional systems.
Student life is structured around flexible learning, allowing students to study alongside work and other commitments. Engagement takes place through regional centres and online platforms rather than a single residential campus.
The university is recognised for its leadership in open and distance education in Southeast Asia and plays a key role in promoting lifelong learning and widening access to higher education.
