As its name suggests, the State University of Feira de Santana is located in Feira de Santana, the second-most populous city in the state of Bahia, Brazil. The university was established in 1970 as a result of governmental strategy aimed at bringing higher education to the interior regions of Bahia, which were previously limited to its capital city, Salvador. There is a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programmes available for students to study at the university from arts and humanities to science and technology. The university is committed to research and community engagement. Through research projects and local outreach programmes, the university actively contributes to the socioeconomic development of the region and further afield, tackling current issues and introducing positive change. There are a number of important centres at the university, which facilitate its various research initiatives and projects. These include the Centre for Culture and Art, the Urban Social Centre Clinic and the Rio Seco Agroecology Centre.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in marine ecology, marine biology, biogeochemistry, geochemistry, environmental science, or a related discipline. They should have strong research experience in field-based marine ecology, including leading or coordinating marine or coastal fieldwork, and demonstrated experience with stable isotope analyses and related data analyses in ecological or biogeochemical contexts. A track record of question-driven research, as evidenced by publications or other research outputs commensurate with career stage, is expected. The successful candidate should have excellent communication, organizational and collaborative skills, and be able to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team. The appointee will join an active research group at SWIMS and SBS working at the interface of marine ecology and conservation, with a particular focus on stable isotope approaches. They will contribute to the design, implementation and analysis of research projects on marine ecology and biogeochemistry using stable isotope tools, conduct and coordinate fieldwork in marine and coastal ecosystems, and carry out sample collection, processing and laboratory analyses. They will lead data analysis and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, reports and grant proposals. The appointee will oversee junior research staff and research assistants, and will contribute to the supervision and mentoring of students involved in related projects. Example research focal areas such as trophic ecology, blue carbon ecosystems, and human impacts on coastal ecosystems are welcome, as are other innovative ideas that complement and extend existing work within SWIMS and SBS. The appointee will have opportunities to develop their own research agenda and to pursue new methods or interdisciplinary collaborations within the broader SWIMS and MSc environment. The appointee will be expected to contribute to research-led teaching and training associated with an MSc programme in marine ecology and conservation, through involvement in appropriate teaching activities, mentoring of MSc students and support for field- and project-based learning, as agreed with the programme leadership. They will be required to work at both the SWIMS facilities and on the main HKU campus and at field sites in Hong Kong and surrounding waters. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. This role supports the Future Ship and System Design (FSSD) Programme, which aims to accelerate the decarbonisation and digitalisation of Singapore’s maritime sector. The project focuses on developing planning methods to support the electrification of harbour craft fleets, using real-world operational data to derive charging demand profiles and infrastructure recommendations. As part of this work, we are seeking a Research Fellow to lead the development of a user-friendly GUI tool that will enable stakeholders to interact with planning models and visualise simulation outputs. The RF will also support increasing coordination between different projects as the number of case studies and incoming datasets continues to grow. Key Responsibilities: Design and develop a GUI tool to make model inputs/outputs accessible to end-users Collaborate with project leads and researchers to ensure technical accuracy of the interface Support integration of simulation outputs across Projects 3-1 and 3-2 Manage and process large sets of operational data for case study analysis Contribute expertise in power grid optimisation to enhance planning models Participate in stakeholder engagements and respond to evolving technical needs Job Requirements: A strong background in power systems, energy modelling, or grid optimisation Proficiency in GUI development (e.g. using Python Dash, Tkinter, or web-based frameworks) Experience working with data-driven simulation and model validation in power grids (Ph.D level is mandatory) Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment Prior exposure to maritime or transport-related electrification studies is a plus
