Saint Ambrose University was founded in 1882 in the city of Davenport, Iowa, USA. The university was founded by the first bishop of Davenport, The Most Reverend John McMullen. Early classes were taught at the St. Marguerite’s School building and in 1885 the school moved to its own campus where Ambrose Hall was built. In 1908 the name was changed to St. Ambrose College to reflect its higher education role. The college merged with Immaculate Conception academy in 1958 and continued to grow. The university campus features its own arena and bookstore as well as the Galvin Fine Arts Centre. The campus is home to all the university’s major academic and residential buildings as well as offices housing the administrative staff. Buildings on the campus are centred around Christ the King Chapel. There is also a Student Wellness and Recreation Centre and sports and leisure facilities.
