SRM University is one of the best engineering institutions in India. Previously SRM Institute of Science and Technology and SRM Engineering College, it became a full university in 2003 and took on its current name three years later.

Three of its seven campuses are in the vast city of Chennai. A fairly recent construction, Chennai, often still called Madras despite its name change in 1997, is the unofficial “capital of the south”. A hot city with one of the longest beaches of any major city worldwide, on the Bay of Bengal, its bustling metropolis is home to the Tamil film industry.

SRM owns more than 600 acres of land overall, and its main Kattankulathur campus alone, located 35km from Chennai, comprises a four-storey library, three colleges, 15 canteens and 40 bus routes.

Other campuses include the one in the ancient town of Sonepat, in the province of Haryana, just north of Delhi; the Modinagar, just north east of the capital, and another in the colourful Himalayan town of Gangtok, a lively base for many mountain excursions which enjoys a mild climate and part-pedestrianised centre. Chennai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, which opened in 2008, is near the city of Tiruchirappalli, commonly referred to as Trichy, which combines memorable temples with must-see bazaars.

Though associated with engineering in particular, SRM runs a wide range of programmes across its Faculties of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Humanities, and Management. SRM stands for Sri Ramaswamy Memorial, to honour the father of universities founder, T. R. Pachamuthu.

About us  King’s College London invites applications for a Research Assistant (RA) in GeoAI, Infectious Diseases, and Health Equity to join the GeoAI for Health Equity Lab (GAHEL, pronounced “gail”) led by Dr. Sabrina Li. The RA will contribute to Dr. Li’s UKRI-funded Future Leaders Fellowship project which focusses on integrating equity considerations into infectious disease mapping and surveillance, starting with the UK. The RA will be based in the Department of Geography, but will have access to training and support from King’s Health Partners Digital Health Hub, King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and the Digital Futures Institute. The RA will also have access to research and career development from King’s Centre for Research Staff Development. The postholder will work closely with Dr. Li and in collaboration with national and international interdisciplinary partners based at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and John Hopkins University (USA). About the role The RA will contribute to the theoretical and methodological developments of scalable GeoAI systems that improve understanding of infectious disease risks across populations and space, particularly for vulnerable and disadvantaged populations. The RA will lead literature review searches to identify the historical, structural, and contextual drivers of disease risk and inequity, and map pathways and interactions among determinants to inform disease mapping and modelling.  The RA will lead the development of a database of high-resolution equity indicators for disease surveillance, and will contribute to the development of novel approaches for managing confidential spatial health data, including differential privacy and other secure geospatial data protocols. This research will advance our understanding of how major infectious diseases of concern in the UK emerge, spread, and unequally affect different individuals and population groups. Outcomes of this research will help advance the development of more equitable, spatial data-driven approaches to public health surveillance and pandemic preparedness, with direct links to public health policy. The findings will inform the development of a real-time spatial AI system to improve early detection and risk prediction, to protect vulnerable populations in the UK and in the future globally. This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a 2-year fixed-term contract. The post is offered on a hybrid working basis, typically involving three days per week on campus and two days remote.  Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. About you To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria  PhD in spatial epidemiology, quantitative geography/remote sensing, ecology, statistics, engineering, data science, quantitative social sciences, or a related discipline.  Experience in developing models and mapping with real world data, with strong programming proficiency in R or Python and version control systems like Git. Familiarity with spatial and statistical libraries (e.g. INLA, PyMC, scikit-learn, GeoPandas). Proven ability to work independently. Track record in publishing peer-reviewed papers. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within teams, with a strong commitment to fostering a fair and inclusive work environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including to diverse audiences.  Desirable criteria Experience managing stakeholder relationships and working in a practitioner/policy context. Job Description Postdoctoral Researcher in Mineral Processing, Battery Materials, and Sustainable Process Engineering.  The researcher will join a multidisciplinary research program aimed at optimizing natural graphite for Li-ion battery applications, developing sustainable purification technologies, and advancing circular water management in mineral processing. The work spans mineral processing, electrochemistry, hydrometallurgy, and environmental engineering. The successful candidate will carry out duties to the highest standard and will: Help at designing and setting up experimental work at lab and pilot scale. Perform materials characterization (XRD, Raman, SEM-EDS, TGA, PSD, BET, ICP). Apply Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical optimization tools to improve processes within the main project and across other ongoing research lines. Fabricate and test graphite anodes via electrochemical techniques (CV, EIS, galvanostatic cycling). Establish correlations between purification conditions, structural properties, and electrochemical performance. Contribute to side research activities involving biomass-derived biochar production, its application in water purification, and the evaluation of adsorption or catalytic performance. Analyze wastewater streams for organic and inorganic contaminants. Evaluate recovery or reuse pathways for reagents and valuable by-products. Assess environmental, economic, and regulatory implications of proposed solutions. Propose scalable solutions for industrial implementation and Water-Energy-Materials nexus. Collaborate with suppliers, support staff, and other engineers, PhD students to plan and implement experiments related to the project. Candidate Profile Strong proficiency in software tools related to materials/process modeling, thermochemical systems, statistical design (DoE), and data analysis. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Solid understanding of the physics, chemistry, and structure–property relationships of carbon materials and inorganic solids. Strong skills in materials characterization techniques, including SEM, XRD, Raman, BET, TGA, ICP, and electrochemical testing. Experience with hydrometallurgical and thermochemical processes, carbon purification, or mineral processing is required; familiarity with pyrolysis or other high-temperature treatments is considered an asset. Beyond Thalidomide (2024-2029), funded by an ERC Starting Grant pioneers a history of the global rise of patient engagement with drug-related disability in the second half of the twentieth century to understand how newly empowered agents transformed conceptions of (reproductive) health and disease in science and society. It develops a framework to examine the origins, development, and consequences of patient engagement with antenatal drug use, iatrogenic disability, and reproductive health from the 1960s until today. The PI of the project is Prof. Birgit Nemec, chair of History of Medicine and the Biomedical Sciences at the Faculty Center for Transdisciplinary Historical and Cultural Studies. The Chair of History of Medicine and Biosciences at the Faculty Center for Transdisciplinary Historical-Cultural Studies aims to test and further develop approaches and methods in the field of modern history of knowledge and political epistemologies of medicine and the life sciences and to connect the department's institutes in research and teaching. The current thematic focus of the chair includes sex/gender diversity; medical products; risks and reproductive health; patient activism; dis/ability and global health as well as oral history methods and methods of research collaboration.
