Setting:

The Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Vienna has world-leading researchers in Computer Science who pursue basic as well as applied research. The UniVie Doctoral School Computer Science (DoCS) builds an essential framework to foster excellence in research and teaching. Its main focus is on young prospective researchers eager to make an impact on both basic research as well as applied problems with collaborations across the University and beyond. The DoCS aims to provide these young researchers with the broad knowledge and expertise needed to perform Computer Science research at the highest achievable quality. The Doctoral School trains doctoral candidates in solving basic as well as applied research questions of high relevance.

The new work group by Prof. Lutz within the research group Workflow Systems and Technology has a broad research focus on topics of business analytics and operations research. The interdisciplinary group aims to develop novel approaches for solving complex decision problems and explaining human behavior in the usage of information technology. For this purpose, the group applies methods from reinforcement learning, explainable AI, natural language processing, and lab experiments. Applications should hence be interested in one or more of the aforementioned topics and/or methods. The particular topics will be determined based on the candidate’s skills and preferences.

Given its interdisciplinary focus, the group collaborates with researchers from both, computer science and business administration. The successful candidate can hence build on a strong network of fellow researchers with a strong knowledge of business analytics and operations research topics.

The appointment is for 4 years, whereby the employment contract is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

The Chin Research Group at the Department of Functional Materials and Catalysis at the Faculty of Chemistry develops advanced porous materials (MOF and COF) for sensing, energy conversion and catalysis.

This PhD project aims to control the growth, alignment, and assembly of framework materials using external fields (electric, magnetic, or flow) to create structured, anisotropic, and multifunctional materials. By coupling field-driven orientation with compositional design, the project will reveal how directional control over framework domains influences charge transport, optical response, and catalytic performance.  Applications include enhanced electrochemical sensing, field-responsive coatings, and energy-harvesting architectures. The candidate will use advanced fabrication, microscopy, and spectroscopy techniques, and work within an interdisciplinary team spanning materials chemistry, surface science, and applied physics.

The position is embedded in the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem), Austria’s largest graduate network in chemical sciences, providing training, mentoring, and networking in a world-class research environment. You will join a vibrant and international research environment within the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem) – Austria’s largest doctoral training program in chemistry. DoSChem brings together more than 200 doctoral students and over 50 PIs, fostering interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research.

The contract duration is 3 years with a preliminary limitation of 1,5 years and will automatically be extended to 3 years unless the employer hands in a non-extension declaration after 12 months. An extension up to a total of 4 years is then possible provided the excellent performance of the candidate.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means you:


	Synthesize and characterize MOF/COF/HOF materials and composites
	Investigate field-assisted growth and assembly using electric, magnetic, or electrohydrodynamic stimuli

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in Law or Computer Science. Candidates with a doctoral degree in Law should demonstrate a strong research record in the field of legal artificial intelligence. Preference will be given to applicants who have teaching or research experience in legal artificial intelligence and can provide compelling evidence of outstanding research accomplishments. Such evidence should include publications in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in 2026.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. Department of Chinese History and Culture 

The Department of Chinese History and Culture is an academic department within the Faculty of Humanities.  Its mission is to offer high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide interdisciplinary training in the study of Chinese history and culture.  Currently, the Department offers PhD and MPhil programmes, a taught-master degree programme, a major degree programme in Chinese History and Culture, two minor degree programmes in Chinese History and Culture and History of Science and Technology in China, respectively, and university-wide general education courses. (h)    good knowledge of the higher education environment in the local and global context; and
