Shiraz University of Medical Sciences is one of the oldest medical universities in Iran, located in the centre of the city of Shiraz.

It dates back to about 70 years ago, when Shiraz Institute of Higher Health Education admitted a few medical students in 1945, as a college within Pahlavi University. In 1953, a faculty of nursing was added, followed by a faculty of dentistry in 1969.

Iranian students are recruited to SUMS through a National Entrance Exam, known as Konkur, while international students are required to apply online.

SUMS offers international degrees and non-degree programmes to international students at different levels and disciplines, including as a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor fo Dental Medicine (DMD) and Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D).

SUMS is not only responsible for training students in medical areas, but also manages all 41 public hospitals, including 14 teaching hospitals, as well as 17 schools, 63 research centres, six research incubators, clinics and healthcare centres in Fars Province in southern Iran.

There are more than 9,000 students studying in over 200 disciplines at the university's schools and research centres.

Health tourism sees the university host hundreds of patients from nearby countries for services such as organ transplantation, cochlear implantation, angiography, radio- and chemotherapy, eye surgery, heart surgery, orthopaedic surgery, foetal surgery and IVF treatment.

The seven faculties at the university are medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, health, nursing and midwifery, paramedical sciences, and rehabilitation.

Alumni include the founder of liver transplantation in Iran, Kamran Bagheri Lankarani.

The Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS) offers a wide range of undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes that integrate quantitative, computational and social science approaches. The appointee will play a key role in advancing the Faculty’s offerings in Computational Social Sciences (CSS), Master of Social Sciences in Social Data Analytics (MSDA) and Maser of Public Administration (MPA). The appointee will contribute to teaching and curriculum development across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervise graduate capstone projects, support programme operations (including admissions, recruitment, and digital promotion activities), advise students on their academic and professional development, and contribute to cross‑disciplinary collaborations within the Faculty and the University. Duties and Responsibilities The appointee will teach and coordinate the following courses (or their equivalents): Undergraduate (UG) Courses FOSS – Introduction to Computational Social Science  SOCI – Programming for Social Scientists  AILT – Digital Literacy Through a Social Sciences Lens Taught Postgraduate (TPg) Courses MSDA – Statistical Foundations  MSDA – Causal Inference in the Social Sciences  SOCI – Quantitative Research Methods Selection Criteria Applicants should possess a Master’s degree or above in Computational Social Science, Data Analytic Statistics, Sociology, Political Science, Public Policy or a relevant social science discipline with strong quantitative focus. Priority will be given to those with: The ability to teach Machine Learning, Programming (Python-based), Natural language processing and Social Network Analysis courses on modern computational social science methods at the graduate level; A track record of completed projects working with computational models and large-scale social science data; Post-qualification working experience in relevant professional or academic settings; Interdisciplinary teaching and research; and Experience working with persons from diverse social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds is expected, alongside excellent communication skills in English. What We Offer A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Postdoctoral Researcher in Theoretical Evolutionary Biology  Modelling the Evolution of Sex-Specific Differences in Life History and Immunity Supervisor: Dr. Piret Avila Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Academy Research Fellow Dr. Piret Avila are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher to develop theoretical work on the evolution of sex-specific differences in immunity and life history traits. We are accepting applications immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The ideal starting date is February/March 2026, but it can be later.  The position involves developing mathematical models to understand how natural selection shapes sex-specific immune strategies. The goal is to generate quantitative predictions testable against empirical data from diverse ecological contexts. We use methods from theoretical evolutionary biology, including optimal control theory, life history modelling, adaptive dynamics, and population genetics. This position is part of the interdisciplinary consortium at the University of Helsinki, Sex Differences in Immunity, led by Dr. Avila, which brings together researchers across evolutionary biology, immunology, genomics, demography, and statistics to bridge evolutionary and mechanistic explanations of sex differences in immunity.
