Basic information and contact details for Shinshu University

institution

Founded in 1949, Shinshu University is a national university in Japan consisting of 8 undergraduate faculties and 6 graduate schools spread across 5 campuses over Nagano Prefecture. Nagano is well known for its rich natural resources and stunning landscapes. "Shinshu", the endearing former name of the Nagano region, is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Visitors from across the globe come to Shinshu to enjoy "Kamikochi National Park" in the Northern Japan Alps, National Treasure sites such as "Matsumoto Castle" and "Zenkoji Temple", and numerous outdoor activities that include trekking in summer and skiing/snowboarding in winter. In fact, Nagano City proudly hosted the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 1998. Nestled in a safe and quiet environment, Shinshu University's campuses are inspiring places for study and research.

Since the time of the once-flourishing silk industry, Nagano has been home to several world-class manufacturing companies in modern history, with a particular strength in precision machinery. Moreover, Shinshu University has ranked first in the "Nationwide University Local Contribution Ranking" for 4 consecutive years and is ramping up its collaborative research efforts with local industries in fundamental sciences such as fiber engineering, carbon science and technology, and more.

Key Educational Principle Creation of graduates able to solve social issues while maintaining an enriched sense of humanity to serve as future leaders in society

  • Our environmental education inspires students to develop an "Environmental Mind", which is a core element in our unique curriculum made possible by the rich natural surroundings of Shinshu.
  • Another particular feature of our curriculum is "Fieldwork", which fosters a deep understanding of the integral relationships between academia and local communities. Students are honed through "Fieldwork" to become innovative leaders who can effectively manage various local and global issues after graduation.
