Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania

Founded in 2001, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania is a private university established to provide higher education in the Hungarian language for Romania’s Hungarian community. The university was founded by the Sapientia Foundation, comprised of the four historical Hungarian churches of Transylvania, and began teaching in three locations: Miercurea Ciuc, Târgu Mureș and Cluj-Napoca. It received full accreditation as an institution of higher education in Hungary in 2012.
Sapientia now operates a multi-city and campus structure through four faculties in Miercurea Ciuc, Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureș and Sfântu Gheorghe, with the location of each faculty reflecting a different academic focus. The Cluj-Napoca Faculty of Sciences and Arts includes programmes in environmental geography, environmental science, photography, film and media, international relations and European studies, diplomacy and law, while the Târgu Mureș faculty includes computer science, mechatronics, electrical engineering, horticulture and public health services and policies.
The university offers over 30 bachelor’s and over 10 master’s programmes. Some programmes are particularly closely connected to the region’s needs, including sustainable biotechnology, food engineering, environmental engineering, landscape architecture and economic informatics. The latter, offered at Miercurea Ciuc, includes programming in Python, Java, JavaScript and Android development and works with partners including IT Plus Cluster and local software companies.
Its students can also participate in Erasmus, offering international study opportunities, and the university publishes ‘Acta Universitatis Sapientiae’, a series of academic journals covering areas including agriculture and environment, informatica, film and media studies, legal studies, mathematics and economics and business.
