Position overview

ANU has an international reputation for research and education relevant to the health and well-being of the population of Australia, as well as that of the developing world. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine (CHM) comprises the School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP), the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH) and the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR). These schools work together to deliver world-class research and education across the spectrum of medicine and health-related fields, working in partnership with the health sector at local, national and international levels.

The National Therapeutic mRNA Platform (NTRP) located within the JCSMR will significantly elevate the quality and global standing of Australia’s mRNA therapeutics pipeline. It aims to establish a sovereign capability that fosters growth, productivity, and competitiveness in the emerging international mRNA technology sector. Supported by the ANU Shine-Dalgarno Centre for RNA Innovation (SDCRI), which hosts Australia’s largest concentration of globally competitive RNA researchers, the NTRP is uniquely positioned to drive this initiative. 

The Team Leader will oversee the development and implementation of the NTRP Project Plan, ensuring strategic goals and milestones are met, including managing equipment and laboratory assays. They will lead NTRP staff and users to successfully deliver various projects, including those supported by academia, NCRIS, and industry. Key responsibilities will include include management of assets and technical resources, providing consultancy for experimental design and data analysis, and coordinating pricing and timelines for projects.

Additionally, the Team Leader will implement new technologies to meet project milestones, pursue business and funding opportunities, and foster relationships with stakeholders through outreach efforts. They will offer strategic advice to the NTRP Steering Committee and ensure compliance with ANU Work Health and Safety policies and laboratory accreditation standards.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has a vacancy for a Professor/Associate Professor in Construction Engineering.

The Department is a leading force within education and research in the construction, civil engineering, and transport sectors.

The position is part of the Building Process research group and covers rock blasting technique, rock excavation in surface and underground operations, tunnelling, earth moving and similar.

Duties of the position


	Teaching and research within the field of Construction Engineering
	Initiate research in planning, design and construction of tunnels, underground spaces and surface rock excavations
	Take part in interdisciplinary education and research collaboration across the different sections of the department, as well as other departments and faculties at NTNU
	Engage in applications for external funding from e.g. the Research Council of Norway, European Research Council, as well as the construction industry and the public owners
	Plan and lead research projects
	Participate in the further development of the Department’s Building Process research group

Required qualifications 

Professor: 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Professor in the field of construction engineering, as outlined in § 1-2 of the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 


	Your scientific experience must be primarily in the field of Construction Engineering (or a comparable relevant field) 
	Your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within Construction Engineering or related fields
	You must have strong and relevant research experience in addition to your PhD

Salary and conditions

As a Professor (code 1013) you are normally paid from gross 800 000 NOK – 1 200 000 NOK per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As an Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross 650 000 NOK – 850 000 NOK per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority.  As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment, are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.   

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

About the job

The Adjunct Associate Professor position has a full-time equivalence of 20% and has a fixed term of 3 years with the possibility of employment for further periods. This role addresses the growing interest in integrating computer vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence within the aquaculture industry, enhancing fish welfare, promoting sustainable operations, and maintaining the structural integrity of farming facilities both in Norway and internationally. The position is externally funded for 3 years. 

Over the recent years, the Department of Engineering Cybernetics experienced a steady increase in interest in computer vision applications for aquaculture fish farming, thereby increasing the number of students choosing related topics for their master projects. To address this growing interest, the department aims to provide specialized teaching in computer vision tailored specifically for aquaculture.

Your immediate leader is Head of Department.

Responsibilities


	Teaching Topics in Computer Vision for Aquaculture: Preparation of lectures and practical sessions for a new specialization course that includes computer vision for aquaculture. This includes development of teaching material such as lecture notes/compendium and exercises.
	Research and project proposals: Contribute to research initiatives/project proposals that includes computer vision for aquaculture, in areas such as individual salmon recognition, fish net inspection, and 3D reconstruction for aquaculture and potential to the development of autonomous marine solutions, with the aim to submit at least one RCN project proposal within the period.
	Student Supervision: Propose topics for, and supervise project and master’s students working on computer vision applications in aquaculture.
	PhD and Research Supervision: Guide PhD candidates, postdoctoral fellows, researchers, and students at the department who wish to require expertise in computer vision for aquaculture.
	Community Building: Contribute to building a strong academic community focused on computer vision for aquaculture within the department, fostering collaboration with other departments on related methodologies and applications.


In this position, you will share academic responsibilities with the department’s other scientific staff. You are therefore obliged to participate in the implementation of the teaching plan according to the current study curriculum and contribute to the ongoing development of the subject area and teaching program.

Required selection criteria

Adjunct Associate Professor:

The position of Assistant Professor within “Advanced Computer Vision for Aquaculture

	Your academic work must include work in practical and/or theoretical computer vision
	for aquaculture
	A PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field with a
	strong focus on computer vision
	At least 2 years of research experience after PhD in computer vision with applications in
	aquaculture or marine environments
	A robust publication record in peer-reviewed conferences and journals, demonstrating
	expertise and leadership in computer vision and its applications in aquaculture
	Proven ability to teach and mentor students at undergraduate and graduate levels, with
	experience in curriculum development and course design
	Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python, and MATLAB, and
	experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and computer

	Demonstrated experience in collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, including
	marine biologists, aquaculture engineers, and industry partners

About the Role

Join a dynamic team at the University of Melbourne's Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication (CQC2T) and push the boundaries of quantum technology.

As a postdoctoral researcher in Ion Beam Applications and Quantum Processor Development, you'll be at the forefront of groundbreaking research, exploring the potential of quantum measurement and sensing using spins in the solid-state. 

The successful candidate will be appointed at the appropriate level (A/B) based upon the Selection Panel’s assessment of the individual’s application.  

Your responsibilities will include:


	Undertake internationally competitive research on quantum sensing and nanoscale magnetometry leading to journal publications with Prof Jeffrey McCallum and other members of the Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T) and relevant research groups within the School of Physics and the wider University as required by the CQC2T research goals.
	Pursue the quantum sensing focussed goals as laid out in the CQC2T research program.
	Liaise closely with research students and other members of the CQC2T programs at the University of Melbourne node and across the Centre as required.


Who We Are Looking For

You are a highly motivated and independent researcher with a strong background in quantum device fabrication and/or sensing using spin systems in the solid-state. Your passion for academic research is evident, and you have a proven ability to excel in a competitive research environment.

You will also have:


	A PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of experimental physics.

The postdoctoral position is associated with the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics (ECMP) group in the School of Physics, University of Melbourne. The ECMP group undertakes high quality, high impact research in a diverse range of fields including quantum science and quantum technologies development, accelerator-based microanalysis and elemental mapping, and  biosciences and bio-engineering. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to work in a team of highly motivated researchers and professional staff. The accelerator laboratory is supported through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Scheme (NCRIS) as a node of the Heavy Ion Accelerator (HIA) platform and this position is supported through that program.

Area overview

ANU has an international reputation for research and education relevant to health and well-being. The ANU College of Health and Medicine comprises the School of Medicine and Psychology, the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health. These schools work together to deliver world-class research and education across the spectrum of medicine and health-related fields, working in partnership with the health sector at local, national and international levels.  

The Centre of Epidemiology for Policy and Practice, within the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, focuses on policy- and practice-relevant research in partnership with beneficiaries and other stakeholders – including community, policy makers and practitioners – to generate evidence to improve health, equity and health care.

The position

Tobacco smoking is the leading modifiable cause of disability and premature death globally, responsible for >8M deaths annually (>10% of all deaths) and is also the leading cause of burden of disease in Australia. It is a major driver of inequity in health, and our research has shown that 50% of deaths in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 45 and over are attributable to tobacco smoking. Australia has recently committed to 5% or less adult daily smoking by 2030. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are an increasing public health concern, with a range of identified health risks, particularly for youth, potential as an aid for individual smoking cessation, and uncertainties regarding many of their health impacts. Australia has adopted a unique model for the regulation of e-cigarettes, with multiple reforms being implemented over the coming years.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow/Fellow to join/lead a vibrant research team working on tobacco control, e-cigarettes and chronic disease. The successful applicant will work on epidemiological and public health projects related to the health impacts of e-cigarette use and chronic disease more broadly.  The successful applicant will also have a leadership role in research on monitoring and evaluation in relation to e-cigarette and tobacco control, and will work to support and enable the National E-cigarette Monitoring and Evidence Consortium.

The Research Fellow/Fellow is expected to undertake work in all three areas of academic activity – research, education and service – including contributing to and potentially convening courses within the ANU Master of Public Health. The Research Fellow is required to supervise or mentor less senior staff, and undertake other leadership roles as applicable. The staff member will contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the Centre, College and University.

The Research Fellow will normally have completed a relevant doctoral qualification or have equivalent qualifications or research experience. In addition, they may also be expected to have had post-doctoral research experience that has resulted in publications, conference papers, reports or professional or technical contributions that give evidence of research ability. 

A Fellow will normally have advanced qualifications and/or recognised significant experience in the relevant discipline area. A position at this level will normally require a doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing. In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard shall be had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and/or to technical achievement. In addition, a position at this level will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline area
