About Princeton University

Basic information and contact details for Princeton University

institution

Princeton is one of the oldest universities in the US and is regarded as one of the world’s most illustrious higher education institutions.

Founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, it was officially renamed Princeton University in 1896 in honour of the area where it is based, opening its famous graduate school in 1900.

Acclaimed for its commitment to teaching, the Ivy League institution offers residential accommodation to all of its undergraduates across all four years of study, with 98 per cent of undergraduates living on campus.

Its student body is relatively small, with fewer than 10,000 in total, and international students make up 12 per cent of undergraduates.

Princeton is also one of the world’s foremost research universities with connections to more than 40 Nobel laureates, 17 winners of the National Medal of Science and five recipients of the National Humanities Medal.

Faculty members who have been awarded a Nobel prize in recent years include chemists Tomas Lindahl and Osamu Shimomura, economists Paul Krugman and Angus Deaton and physicists Arthur McDonald and David Gross.

Notable alumni who have won a Nobel prize include the physicists Richard Feynman and Robert Hofstadter and chemists Richard Smalley and Edwin McMillan.

Princeton has also educated two US presidents, James Madison and Woodrow Wilson, who was also the university’s president prior to entering the White House. Other distinguished graduates include Michelle Obama, actors Jimmy Stewart and Brooke Shields, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Apollo astronaut Pete Conrad.

Princeton, which is consistently ranked among the world’s top 10 universities, is renowned for its campus’ park-like beauty as well as some of its landmark buildings, designed by some of America’s most well-known architects. For instance, its Lewis Library was designed by Frank Gehry and contains many of the university’s science collections. Its McCarter Theatre Center has won a Tony Award for the best regional theatre in the country.

Spread across 500 acres, the Princeton campus has about 180 buildings, including 10 libraries containing about 14 million holdings. It is popular with visitors, with about 800,000 people visiting its open campus each year, generating about $2 billion in revenue.

The Princeton area, which has a population of about 30,000 residents, is also something of a destination itself, with many attracted by its tree-lined streets and wide variety of shops, restaurants and parks.

The university is within easy reach of both New York City and Philadelphia, with the “Dinky” shuttle train providing a regular service lasting about one hour to both cities. Princeton regularly subsidises many student trips to concerts, plays and athletic events in the two cities.

At the University of Vienna almost 11,000 personalities work together towards answering the big questions of the future. Around 7,700  of them do research and teaching, around 3,000 work in administration and organisation. We are looking for a/an University Assistant postdoctoral 51 Faculty of Physics Startdate: 01.05.2026 | Working hours: 40 | Collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) Limited until: 30.04.2030 Reference no.: 5330 “How does a quantum object gravitate?”, “How far can we push massive objects into the quantum regime?”, “How well can we measure gravity of microscopic systems?”. Such questions and their implications for the foundations of physics are the driving force behind our research. You will be part of our team and develop new ideas, technologies and experiments to provide new insights on macroscopic quantum physics, on gravity at small scales and, in the long run, on the phenomenology of the gravity-quantum interface in table-top experiments. Your personal sphere of play: As a University Assistant Postdoc, you will be part of the Aspelmeyer group, and you will be exploring macroscopic quantum phenomena using levitated solid-state platforms. The main research activities of our group include quantum optical control of levitated solid-state objects, the exploration of their quantum properties for fundamental questions and novel quantum technology platforms, as well as precision measurements of ultra-weak gravitational forces. Our main motivation is to explore the interface between quantum physics and gravity with new experimental platforms. Our team is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics and Quantum Information group of the Faculty of Physics. We are a member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe, and of the Austrian Cluster of Excellence (quantA), advancing basic research in quantum sciences, aiming to expand the frontiers of knowledge and thus being the engine for future innovations. The Aspelmeyer group explores the interface between quantum physics and gravity in experiments, in particular involving quantum objects as sources of gravity. On the quantum side, we explore the extreme regime of motional quantum states of solids and their interactions to understand how to maximize mass, delocalization, and coherence time in quantum experiments. On the gravity side, we explore the extreme regime of gravitational phenomena of miniature source masses to understand how to isolate gravity from all other interactions on a microscopic scale. Together with colleagues from theory we try to formulate meaningful questions that help to establish decisive experimental tests of the quantum nature of gravity. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You build up an independent research profile in the field of quantum optomechanics with levitated solid-state systems. You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the area of quantum optical control of massive solid-state systems. You publish internationally and give lectures. You apply for projects and raise third-party funds. You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You supervise your students. You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance. You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration. This is part of your personality: You have completed your doctoral/PhD studies in experimental quantum optics or AMO physics, in particular with expertise in quantum control in cryogenic ultrahigh vacuum environments. You have an outstanding dissertation. You have research competence and initiative proven through international publications in peer-relevant media. You have experience in research management and in leading project staff. You should have experience in teaching. You have IT skills and excellent laboratory skills involving quantum optical or AMO control methods in combination with cryogenic UHV environments. Knowledge: experimental experience with macroscopic quantum phenomena, including quantum optomechanics and its applications, matter-wave interferometry, AMO physics, quantum control of trapped solids, is a significant advantage. You have excellent command of written and spoken English. Team player and high social/communicative skills What we offer: Work-life balance: Our employees enjoy flexible working hours, remote/hybrid and/or part-time work (upon agreement). Inspiring working atmosphere: You are a part of an international academic team in a healthy and fair working environment. Good public transport connections: Your workplace in the center of beautiful Vienna is easily accessible by public transport. Internal further training & coaching: Opportunity to deepen your skills on an ongoing basis. There are over 600 courses to choose from – free of charge. Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 5.014,30 (14 times a year) for a period of 4 years, increases if we can credit professional experience. Equal opportunities for all: We welcome every additional/new personality to the team! It is that easy to apply: With your scientific curriculum vitae / letter of intent With your list of publications With your summary of research interests (max. 1 p.)
