Title of research project: Non-Thermal Plasma-Based Hydrogen (H2) Production

Description of the Research Project:

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on plasma-driven hydrogen (H2) production. The project focuses on developing innovative methods for hydrogen generation using non-thermal plasma, both with and without catalytic materials. Plasma technologies offer a promising route for sustainable hydrogen production because they can activate molecules and drive chemical reactions at relatively low temperatures and atmospheric pressure.

The successful candidate will investigate plasma processes for hydrogen production, including the role of plasma-generated reactive species and the interaction between plasma and catalytic surfaces. The research will explore how operating conditions such as gas composition, discharge power, pressure, and reactor configuration influence hydrogen production efficiency.

The project will combine plasma reactor development, plasma diagnostics, and materials characterization. Techniques such as optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and laser diagnostic tools will be used to study plasma properties and reaction pathways. Catalysts materials will be analyzed using appropriate characterization techniques.

Several plasma sources are already operating at the ACER CoE, together with optical and laser diagnostic systems. The goal of this research is to improve the understanding of plasma chemistry and plasma-catalyst interactions in order to develop more efficient and sustainable hydrogen production technologies.

Key duties:

Design and operate non-thermal plasma reactors Study the influence of operating conditions (gas composition, power, and reactor configuration) on hydrogen production. Investigate plasma-catalyst interactions and reaction mechanisms Use optical and laser diagnostic techniques to characterize plasma and quantify reactive species. Description of the Research Project:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct experimental research on plasma propagation in open atmosphere and plasma-surface interactions using advanced optical and laser diagnostic techniques. The project aims to improve the understanding of the physical and chemical processes in non-thermal plasmas and how these plasmas interact with material surfaces.

The successful candidate will investigate the dynamics of plasma propagation and the generation of reactive species under different operating conditions. The research will use optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and laser-based diagnostic techniques to characterize plasma properties, identify reactive species, and measure key plasma parameters, as well as the absolute densities of atoms and molecules.

The project will also explore how plasma interacts with different materials and how plasma treatment modifies surface properties. Surface characterization will be carried out using techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Applicants must possess;


	A PhD in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related discipline such as Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering, Production Engineering, Petroleum Geoscience, Chemical Engineering (Petroleum), Mechanical Engineering (Energy Systems) or Energy Engineering from a recognised institution. 
	Membership of a recognised professional body such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) or an equivalent organisation. 
	An internationally recognised record of scholarly achievement appropriate for appointment to the rank of Professor. 
	A substantial publication record, including at least 15 scholarly publications and authorship or co-authorship of one or more academic books


Experience and Technical Expertise

The successful applicant should demonstrate:


	At least 15 years of university teaching, research and/or senior industry experience in the petroleum or energy sector. 
	A distinguished record of internationally recognised research with more than 15 indexed publications and with significant publications, citations and research impact.

	Strong collaboration with industry, government and international research organisations.

Conditions of Service


	Base Salary Range: Professor PGK95,366 – PGK116,558 per annum

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience) 

The initial contract period is for three years. Benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in the first year, 35% in the second year, and 40% in the third year (paid on fortnightly basis), support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and dependents, book & equipment allowance of PGK750.00 per annum, settling-in/out allowance of PGK1,700.00 for single & PGK3,600.00 for accompanied plus PGK200.00 for each of two authorized dependent children (under 19 years) on appointment and repatriation, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two authorized dependents after 18 months of service and education fares and assistance towards school fees for authorized dependents are available. Staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of their earnings annually. Consultancy projects need to be approved by the respective Head of School and the Vice Chancellor’s office. Furnished accommodation is provided on campus. All earnings in PNG attract income tax, the tax rates are progressive and the maximum rate is 40%.

About the Role

An exciting opportunity to work as part of the End-of-Life Essentials (EOLE) team, responsible for delivering two key projects aimed at improving the delivery of end-of-life care through the development of education and resources to support health professionals working in acute hospital and general practice settings.

Working under the direction of the National Project Manager, the Website and Systems Officer will play a key role in delivering project outcomes by ensuring EOLE's online education and resource platforms remain accessible, current, and effective. This includes system and website maintenance, undertaking regular maintenance, updates, and enhancements on the EOLE website and other information systems, including troubleshooting technical issues, and undertaking regular reporting.

Responsibilities also include:


	Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to the EOLE Project and University. This includes engagement and collaboration with health services and health professionals across Australia to improve access and utilisation of EOLE education and resources.
	Work collaboratively with external Learning Management System (LMS) provider to deliver and establish workforce reporting capabilities for health services and embed EOLE education with external learning platforms. This includes providing technical support to stakeholders, troubleshooting and escalating system issues for resolution.
	Supporting the Chief Investigators, National Project Manager, and team to implement activities under the project’s /Activity Work Plans to meet key project deliverables.
	Work collaboratively to establish positive working relationships with members of the EOLE team, across the University, other National Palliative Care Projects and other key project collaborators.
