The University of Southampton is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral Research Fellow for 30 months (with the possibility of extension). The Fellow will support the AHRC-Funded project 'Strange Geographies: Spatial Imaginaries of Medieval Britain, c.1200-1500’, a collaboration between Southampton, Queen Mary University of London, the University of Cambridge, and a range of heritage and creative partners. ‘Strange Geographies’ focuses on an under-explored body of manuscript sources containing geographical material produced between 1200 and 1500. It will itemize, contextualize and interpret these sources to understand their role in shaping medieval spatial imaginaries, identities, and wider histories of geography. Through collaborations with musicians, poets and heritage partners, the project will also explore potential of creative collaborations to open up new ways of connecting people to the places and spaces of the past. The Fellow will carry out library and archive-based research into medieval manuscript resources across the British Isles and occasionally overseas, as well as desk-based research, transcription, editing, and preparing materials for web publication under the direction of the project lead and co-leads. You will contribute to the project dissemination by organising and participating in conference panels, workshops, and public engagement activities. You will publish academic outputs individually and in collaboration with the project lead and co-leads. You will have completed a PhD in a relevant medieval subject and will have good reading and transcription competence in medieval Latin as well as demonstrable experience of working with medieval manuscripts (including from the British Isles). In addition to these essential disciplinary research skills, you will have strong organisational skills. You will be required to be flexible and to have the ability to collaborate effectively with team members across multiple institutions. Applicants should possess: (i) a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a related discipline; (ii) evidence of international recognition and a strong record of scholarship with a demonstrated ability to work across disciplines towards new research initiatives; (iii) a strong commitment to engaging students in inquiry-based learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and (iv) a strong track record of high-quality research as indicated by publication record and external grants. The appointees are expected to participate in teaching biomedical sciences subjects relevant to human health and diseases spanning basic biochemical, cellular and molecular biology to whole body organization and homeostasis, across a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes including medical, biomedical sciences, pharmacy, nursing and/or Chinese medicine. They will also be expected to establish an innovative and well-funded research group that is open to interdisciplinary collaboration. Research should be at the forefront of biology and medicine, spanning basic molecular and cellular processes, developmental and stem cell biology, cancer, body defence systems, neuroscience, bioinformatics and bioengineering. In the course of career development, the appointees are expected to make substantial contributions to the School’s strategic developments in academic and research collaborations locally, regionally and internationally. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. We are looking for candidates whose expertise strengthens research on adult education by providing novel theoretical and methodological approaches. An appointee is required to show experience in research on two of the following areas:  New forms of professional development or expertise Adult education policies and practices in national and global contexts Workplace learning and transformations in working life. The appointee is expected to build and lead active interaction with cooperative networks with decision-makers in private, public and/or third sector, and representatives of other stakeholders, and advance societal impact of research. The position is located in the General and Adult Education discipline.  Successful performance requires collaboration with domestic and international actors and experts in adult education, and active participation in obtaining external research funding. The position includes Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral level teaching and supervision in the areas mentioned above. The role includes administrative duties, and the appointee expected to contribute to public engagement.  The broadly oriented professorship in adult education strengthens the discipline as a whole and supports the renewal of its international, national and broader societal significance. Qualification requirements and appointment criteria  Associate and assistant professors within the tenure track system must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be capable of conducting independent scholarly work, alongside the requisite teaching skills. Research relevant to the professorship’s field is considered an asset. In addition, the appointee must be capable and willing to promote their academic career through publications and other means, and develop teaching, learning and research in the field. The assessment of applicant qualifications considers not only research and teaching merits, but also success in securing external research funding and experience in domestic and international research projects.  Full professors must hold an applicable doctoral degree and possess advanced academic qualifications, experience in leading scholarly research, the requisite teaching skills and evidence of success in securing external research funding and international collaboration in their research field. Applicants must be able to deliver teaching based on top-level research and supervise theses. The position also requires academic leadership skills. The assessment of applicant qualifications considers both scholarly and teaching-related qualifications.  Scholarly qualifications encompass relevant publications and other academically valuable research results, success in securing external research funding, international research experience, as well as academic responsibilities and elected positions, and international relations. Teaching qualifications encompass teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills and participation in training doctoral researchers. Also considered are applicants’ leadership and interaction skills and their active contribution to the academic community and public engagement. In addition, the appointment committee will review applicants’ views on the development of research and teaching in the field.
