Polytechnic University of Tirana was founded in 1951, became part of the State University of Tirana in 1957,and then became a university in its own right in 1991.

In a further reset in 2005, courses were reformed according to the Bologna programme.

It is Albania’s second largest university and second oldest. It operates from five sites in central Tirana. It is divided into faculties of civil engineering, information technology, mechanical engineering, geology and mining, electrical engineering, maths and physics and architecture and urban planning.

The faculty of architecture and urban planning, in most years receives at least three applications for each of its 120 places.

It was the first Albanian university to offer Japanese classes to students in 2016, and since 2018 has housed Albania’s first Japanese Language laboratory.
