Founded in 1961 as the Higher Institute of Pedagogy for Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv became a full university in 1972. It is located in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, with main campuses at 24 Tsar Assen Street, 236 Bulgaria Boulevard, Kostaki Peev Street, and the Old Town.
The university has over 8,000 full-time and around 5,000 part-time students, and employs more than 900 academic and non-academic staff.
There are nine faculties covering humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics.
Facilities include libraries, computer and language laboratories, multimedia labs, a distance learning centre, career guidance services, a sports centre, a student theatre, and technical support units.
Paisii Hilendarski University participates in international research and educational projects, partnering with institutions across Europe, the US, Asia, and Africa.
