ABOUT THE SCHOOL/ACADEMY/DEPARTMENT The Department of Applied Linguistics is a research-intensive environment with two MA programmes, which also contributes a Linguistics pathway on four UG programmes. We have recently established a Language and Cognition Research Laboratory, for Psycholinguistic and Phonetic research, with eye tracking technology. We contribute to several research groups, including Corpus Linguistics, Health Humanities, Language and Technology, and Language and Cognition. Linguistics at XJTLU is a rapidly expanding area. We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Assistant/Associate/Senior Professor with excellent research, teaching, and supervision qualifications who will contribute to the department’s research profile. We are specifically looking for candidates who can contribute to one of our key strategic areas: Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing.  Language and Health Psycholinguistics/Language and Psychology/Cognitive Linguistics Language and culture/Cultural Linguistics Theoretical Linguistics (including Syntax and/or Chinese Linguistics). RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES The appointee will be expected to contribute to the department’s research profile and should have an excellent track record of publication in their research area, appropriate to their stage of career. An ability and willingness to contribute to or lead collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects would be a strong advantage. In terms of teaching, the successful candidate must be able to contribute new elements to existing modules related to the specified field (see above), and develop new modules in where required. In addition to their specified area, the successful candidate must be able to contribute widely to the Undergraduate Programme, including in least two of the following: Introduction to Linguistics: Discourse, English as a Global Language, History of English, Language and Society, Semantics and Pragmatics, Language and Gender, Health Humanities, Intercultural Communication, or Language Documentation. A contribution to academic administration will also be expected.  Staff typically teach 1-1.5module(s) per semester, depending on student numbers. The role We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative postdoctoral researcher to join a 3-year STFC-funded project exploring one of the central questions in astrophysics: what is dark matter made of? The project, Stellar streams as seismometers for dark matter subhaloes, is led by Dr Denis Erkal alongside Dr Eugene Vasiliev. During this project, data from Gaia, LSST, WEAVE, 4MOST, and S5 will provide the richest dataset to date for studying perturbations to stellar streams. The successful candidate will work on multiple facets of this problem. First, they will explore how perturbations to streams develop from a variety of baryonic effects. This catalogue of perturbed streams will be used to test how well subhaloes can be inferred, and which streams in the Milky Way are the cleanest detectors. Second, working with collaborators to exploit upcoming datasets, we will identify the most promising streams with perturbation signatures and fit these. For these fits, we will explore the speed up from using GPUs as well as machine learning techniques, e.g. simulation-based inference. Finally, we will use similar techniques to make a statistical inference of the population of subhaloes by reproducing the stream's statistical properties. The role will involve: building a census of simulated streams with a variety of perturbations; comparing CPU and GPU codes for generating and perturbing streams; using likelihood-based and simulation-based inference techniques for exploring subhalo properties; measuring the properties of subhaloes in the Milky Way; publishing results in leading journals and presenting the work at national and international meetings; contributing to the S5, LSST, WEAVE, and 4MOST collaborations where appropriate; contributing to the wider research culture of the Astrophysics Research Group at Surrey. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their own research ideas within the broad themes of the project and to build an independent research profile. Description The Center for Interdisciplinary Data Science and AI (CIDSAI) at NYU Abu Dhabi is a cross‑disciplinary hub where mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, and social scientists join forces to push the boundaries of data‑driven discovery. Our mission is two‑fold: to advance fundamental theory in probability and machine learning, and to translate those breakthroughs into high‑impact tools that serve the UAE, the wider Arab world, and global society. We are seeking a Junior Research Scientist to join the team to work under the theme of Computational & Interactive Health under the supervision of Dr. Farah Shamout & Dr. Hanan Salam and in close collaboration with Prof. Nizar Habash. The researcher is expected to have strong machine learning & AI skills and exemplary passion and motivation to pursue multidisciplinary research at the intersection of computing and healthcare. The project has three main objectives: (a) developing robust computational methods for decision-making in health based on clinical use cases of interest, (b) building a tailored health-focused Arabic knowledge interactive language model through the development of benchmark datasets, evaluation frameworks, and specialized LLMs and AI agents, and finally (c) designing specialized interactive multimodal multi-lingual natural interfaces. Qualifications: A master's degree in less than 5 years of research experince in the relevant field or a bachelors degree with any level of experince.
