POST DOC POSITION IN ENCAPSULATION OF ACTIVE MATERIALS FOR CARBON CAPTURE AND UTILIZATION – JOINTLY WITH UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO, CANADA 12716 We are looking for a motivated PDRA candidate to investigate the encapsulation of active materials (liquids or solids) for developing innovative CO2 Capture and Utilization (CCU) processes. This position is motivated by the fact that many attractive options for CCU solvents suffer from their high viscosity, limiting thus the absorption kinetics. While benchmark alkanolamine-based aqueous liquids suffer from potential environmental impacts from solvent release. Encapsulating absorbents within polymer- and/or nanomaterial-based shells represents a promising solution. The successful candidate should elaborate novel solutions to encapsulate innovative solvents (e.g., Deep Eutectic Solvents, Ionic Liquids, Porous Liquids or bio-based solid materials) to enhance not only the chemical and thermal stability of the polymer shell and the filled beads but also the surface area of the functional shell. A particular attention will be also placed on the surface properties to tune the selectively of the shell to allow the permeation to specific gases, like the CO2, while prevent permeation of other species, like H2O. By following this strategy, encapsulated solvents (sorbents) should keep their own performance by taking advantage of the high surface area of the shell. The proposed beads should be both chemically and mechanically stable under typical industrial conditions moving from post-combustion process to direct air capture (DAC) technology. However, there will be a particular focus on DAC. Job Description : The successful candidate will carry out duties to the highest standard and will: Undertake original research of international excellence. Develop research objectives and proposals for own and/or collaborative research projects. Publish papers in leading journals and present research findings at national/international conferences, workshops, and meetings to effectively disseminate the results and contribute to successful research outputs. Communicate the development, progress and results of research activities to the team, Communicate the development, progress and results of research activities to the team to ensure that relevant information and issues in the implementation of projects/experiments are captured in as comprehensive and timely manner as possible.. Establish collaborative links with the core scientific personnel in related program areas to gain exposure to and build knowledge on experimental/research activities and approaches, in order to improve conceptual development and industrial implementation. Identify areas of improvement within the research structure using integrated management approaches in pursuit of capacity building/strengthening and the preservation of scientific rigor in research studies. Support if required, the development of proposals for research funding. Candidate PROFILE : A PhD in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Science, or related subject. Expert in the interfacial phenomena and encapsulation of materials in solid or liquid state. Expert in the materials (polymers and nanomaterials) synthesis and characterization. Good knowledge in Thermodynamics and Fluid Phase Equilibrium are also requested. Knowledge about carbon capture technologies will be preferred  Associated Skills : Experience working on a project combining organic materials synthesis, purifications, and their characterization. Proven past experiences on the preparation and characterization of polymers and encapsulated materials. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team. Proven and distinct work experiences in academia and/or industries and/or abroad are highly requested. Waterloo co-supervisors may offer additional funding support to the candidates for their residency at Waterloo. The amount and duration of additional funding will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The program duration will normally be three years; during this time the residency will be split between the UM6P and Waterloo campuses. Candidates will spend a maximum total residency of two (2) years at Waterloo and a minimum total residency of one (1) year at UM6P. The details and schedule will be determined upon mutual agreement by the candidates and their respective UM6P and Waterloo co-supervisors.

About the  project: This project aims to lower energy consumption and increase the water recovery of seawater desalination using the concept of desalination dilution by integrating a hybrid Forward Osmosis (FO) — Reverse Osmosis (RO) system. The work of this project includes lab work, computer modelling, life cycle assessment, and techno-economic study. The project will contribute to protecting water resources, promoting circular economic and zero liquid discharge concepts, and reducing the environmental impact of brine and unwanted water. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary research team who are working on a project funded by OCP Group. The successful postdoctoral applicant will manage an exciting project on membrane processes technology and small-scale testing for seawater desalination. He/she should demonstrate experience in membrane processes, water quality analysis, and lab and pilot-scale testing of water treatment and desalination processes. Required qualifications: The successful postdoctoral applicant will manage an exciting project on hybrid FO-RO desalination system and small-scale testing for seawater desalination applications. The candidate should have a PhD in Engineering (including Environmental, Civil or Chemical Engineering), Material Science or any other relevant field. The candidate should have excellent experimental and analytical skills relevant to the project (assessment of membrane processes and water quality analysis) are required. Experience in computational fluid dynamics modelling of water treatment and desalination processes is an advantage. Willingness to work within a multidisciplinary group. Demonstrated skills in scientific writing in the form of research journal articles, conference papers, or high-quality scientific reporting. Innovative, driven, out-of-the-box thinker, well-organized, self-motivated to investigate and implement new ideas, and proactive in overcoming obstacles. Good communication and presentation skills in English. French is an advantage. Skills in problem solving, analytical thinking, and planning. Hence, the successful candidate should develop a wide range of expertise, mainly, in the areas of Gas/Vapor/Liquid adsorption and membrane applications, Reticular chemistry of materials, Porous adsorbents, X-ray crystallography, Spectroscopy, and Topological analysis of inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid coordination polymers. Job description: The Applied Chemistry and Engineering Research Centre of Excellence (ACER CoE) at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position combining skills at the interface between chemistry and chemical engineering under the direction of Prof Youssef Belmabkhout. The successful candidate will develop and conduct applied research programs in chemistry and chemical engineering focusing on designing and development of materials for gas storage applications, gas/vapor/liquid separation purification, sensing and/or waste transformation/energy efficiency. Other duties include advising graduate students and contribution to build up a first-class research-oriented research program at UM6P. The incumbent will be encouraged to collaborate with other researchers in related fields within the centre and within UM6P. The position is open to individuals who hold a Doctoral degree in the subject discipline from a recognized university. The candidate should demonstrate that their PhD work and past experience allow them to have a connection to one or several aspects of the areas of research mentioned above. Very good English communication, both verbal and written, is required. Key duties: Successful candidates are expected to: Conducting scientific research in a team composed of multidisciplinary researchers; Supervise graduate student within ACER CoE; Participate to develop funded research projects and programs in the area in collaboration with multidisciplinary groups in the field; Presenting research results and scientific outcomes to stakeholders and at scientific meetings and conferences; Publish research results in peer-reviewed and high impact international academic journals of the field. Criteria of the candidate:  PhD in chemistry or chemical engineering or other related fields from a recognized University; Demonstrated understanding of research excellence and operational requirements to achieve successful/high-quality research; Publication record in leading international and well ranked journals, preferably on the design and preparation of porous materials for gas/vapor adsorptive and membrane separations; Experience in developing and validating methods, operating and troubleshooting different gas/vapor adsorption/membrane testing instruments; Willingness to learn how to generate new ideas, links, and to build upon existing ideas to generate good concepts and solutions; Ability to co-supervise graduate students; Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English language; Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects; Enthusiasm towards generating new ideas and passion for solving challenging problems that require complex creative solutions. Skills: The candidate must have demonstrated a research activity in most of the following disciplinary fields: Synthesis of porous materials (such as MOFs, zeolites or other silica-based materials); Experience in characterization of porous materials using various techniques such as BET, TGA-DSC¬MS, PXRD, SXRD, FTIR, NMR, SEM, XPS, etc. and technical skills on the manipulation of most of those instruments; Experience in the use of academic databases (CCDC, RCSR, ...) and softwares (Material Studio, Diamond, Origin, ....); Evidence of experience in adsorptive or/and membrane separation technologies. Project description: The Lithium-ion battery comprises multiple individual units known as "cells." Any deterioration or degradation in a single cell directly impacts the battery's overall performance and lifespan. Therefore, it is crucial to have a monitoring system in place for close oversight of this critical component. The battery management system (BMS) unit is not just a component, but a crucial element tasked with monitoring each cell of the battery and running algorithms to calculate state of charge (SoC), overall health, and more. For instance, in electric vehicles, the BMS carries out functions such as monitoring, controlling, optimizing, and ensuring safety to mitigate potential hazards related to battery performance. Its role is pivotal in the overall performance and safety of the vehicle, underscoring the importance of our work in this field. Various algorithms, models, and signals control different components of the BMS in lithium-ion batteries, including sensors, actuators, and controllers. In our facility, we are establishing a research unit focused on developing the necessary hardware and software components of a BMS to keep pace with the advancements in lithium-ion battery technology. Candidate Profile: Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field. An in-depth expertise in batteries and renewable energy systems including fault detection, diagnosis, and performance improvement methods. Mastery of dynamic reconfiguration approaches. Mastery of power converters. Mastery of software tools including MATLAB, PSIM, Proteus, LabVIEW, SketchUp, SolidWorks, etc. Knowledge of microcontrollers, STM32, FPGAs, etc. Knowledge of communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, Profibus, Modbus, CAN, MQTT, and HTTP. Knowledge of the ROS environment. Undertake original research of international excellence. Engage in innovative international research of outstanding quality. Prepare papers for indexed journal publications, propose invention patents, and/or actively participate in sharing results at national and international conferences, workshops, and meetings. Communicating the development, progress, and results of research tasks to the research project team to identify the requirements for future activities. Develop collaborative links with the core scientific staff in related program areas to gain exposure and build knowledge on experimental/research activities and approaches and improve conceptual development and implementation.
