ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Department belongs to the School of Science and focuses on Chemistry and Materials Science. It has recruited faculty from globally distinguished institutions working in these disciplines. Although relatively young, the Department has already established a solid reputation, as indicated by its large number of high quality research publications in impactful journals (Q1),  growing number of grant awards to its staff (e.g., from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and major industry partners) and national and international research collaborations. It has state-of-the-art instrumentation housed in custom-built labs, and provides excellent technical support. Current research areas include: Advanced materials, High-performance batteries and supercapacitors, Nano porous materials, Microfluidic-based biosensors, Nano-electrocatalysts - Energy nanomaterials, Biomaterials and their biomedical applications, High-throughput screening, Carbohydrates Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry, and AI/Robotics for Chemistry among others. The Department is dedicated to providing an international environment for both teaching and research, with around half of its academic staff born out of mainland China. The Department also collaborates closely with the newly established Advanced Materials Research Center (AMRC), a university-level research center specialized in the development and application of novel materials. The academic unit was first established in 2010 as the Department of Chemistry and recently was renamed into the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science to better describe its growing work and impact in the two fields. Job Purpose: The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to develop a Multimodal AI for Fire Detection & Safety Systems. Key Responsibilities:  Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Collaborator and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Develop and deploy multimodal AI algorithms for fire, smoke, and hot-work detection by fusing optical, thermal/infrared, LiDAR, RADAR, and gas sensor data under varying environmental conditions. Design computer vision and human-behavior analysis models for detecting personnel, posture, casualties, and hazardous situations, including operation in low-visibility scenarios. Implement scene mapping, environment perception, and path-planning algorithms using LiDAR and RADAR data to support evacuation guidance and first-responder navigation. Build real-time predictive models for fire intensity and spread forecasting and integrate LLM-based scene description and decision support into an end-to-end deployable system. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Electrical / Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a closely related discipline, with foundational knowledge in signal processing and machine learning. Working knowledge of computer vision and deep learning concepts, including object detection and image-based classification, with hands-on experience using Python and at least one deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow). Basic experience handling and processing sensor data (e.g., camera, thermal, LiDAR, RADAR, or similar perception sensors) in real-world or laboratory settings. Familiarity with Linux-based development environments and standard software tools for data analysis, model training, and evaluation. Ability to independently implement, test, and document applied research solutions, with prior experience through projects, internships, or research assistantships considered sufficient. Prior experience in publishing is desirable.

We are building a distinctive capability at the intersection of cybersecurity, engineering systems, critical infrastructure, and applied learning. They play distinctive yet complementary roles in advancing SIT's mission in education and applied research. Faculty provide academic leadership in the design, delivery, and continual enhancement of programmes, ensuring academic rigour and industry relevance, while Professional Officers, as technical specialists, embed current and emerging industry practices and support practice-oriented delivery. Together, they strengthen SIT's applied learning environment through hands-on, real-world approaches that enhance students' industry readiness. The MEMG was built and operated with SP Group, integrating solar PV, thermal, and distributed energy resources into a live, sandbox-grade environment for energy transition research. The campus also houses the Energy Efficiency Technology Centre (EETC), established with the National Environment Agency, whose Energy Efficiency Training Facility is a first-of-its-kind integrated industrial systems plant in Singapore — giving staff and students a working industrial process environment for development, applied research, and hands-on training. Alongside these, the Centre for Intelligent Robotics at Punggol Digital District, together with the SIT–NVIDIA AI Centre, gives staff and students authentic cyber-physical environments in which to develop, integrate, and stress-test new technologies under realistic operating conditions. In parallel, SIT works closely with the maritime ecosystem on decarbonisation and digitalisation. Through its Future Ship and System Design Programme and partnerships with DNV's Maritime Decarbonisation & Autonomy Regional Centre of Excellence, Seatrium's Offshore & Marine Digital Learning Lab, RINA, and MPA-linked initiatives, SIT engages directly with shipowners, yards, classification societies, and regulators on zero-emission and autonomous vessels, shore charging and future-fuel bunkering, digital twins, and AI-enabled remote operations. Taken together, these platforms, the deep industry partnership network across the energy and maritime sectors and next-generation AI and robotics use cases, provide an exciting ecosystem of real assets, operators, and operational problems to which security, resilience, and safe-operation research can be applied, tested, and translated into practice. Areas of interest in OT cybersecurity This search prioritises practitioners. We are looking, first and foremost, for candidates with substantial, hands-on experience defending real-world industrial environments as asset owners, operators, integrators, consultants, or responders, who can bring that operational experience, engineering constraints and sector-relevant problems into the classroom and the lab. We welcome accomplished academics, but the strongest candidates will have spent significant time on plant floors, in control rooms, and inside live OT networks and environments. Candidates should be able to translate that field experience into rigorous, hands-on teaching, authentic learning experiences, and useful, industry-relevant outcomes.
