Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA) is a Portuguese higher education institution with internationally recognized research and quality teaching reflected in the results obtained in several renowned rankings. Founded in 1973, NOVA has nine academic Units that offer a wide variety of degrees in all areas of knowledge and constitute an incontestable cultural, artistic, academic and technological resource. NOVA has a strong tradition of work in areas of innovation, with corresponding outcomes in the economy, services, and in extracurricular training, establishing important protocols with its peers, both nationally and internationally. The internationalization strategy of NOVA has been reinforced through the active participation in several student and staff mobility programmes within the universe of European, Portuguese speaking and Latin American Higher Education Institutions. The university is also actively involved in cooperation actions promoted by the Portuguese Government, in particular with North-American universities, such as the University of Texas at Austin (UTA), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), namely in master's courses and doctoral and research programmes. In the Entrepreneurship field, NOVA is creating and developing an entrepreneurial ecosystem within the University, designed to help students acquire tools, develop skills and cultivate the mindset central to launch and manage successful new ventures. NOVA launched, in 2013, as part of its Strategic Plan, a Doctoral School aimed to enhance excellency in Doctoral Education. As a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor, you will be expected to develop and lead a significant externally funded programme of research in line with the Faculty of Health and Medical Science’s mission of sustainably improve the health and wellbeing of humans and animals, and their environments through new knowledge and its application to the design, development and delivery of responsible innovation and impact. About the role Within the School of Veterinary Medicine, you will join the Section of Molecular Cellular Medicine within the Discipline of Comparative Biomedical Sciences. In the role you will: Establish and lead a sustainable research group, developing complex, multi-organ in vitro models for predictive disease research Work collaboratively with other researchers in the School to design and develop applications of in vitro models in their research areas Generate high quality publications and demonstrable impact Secure significant external research income to support the work of your research group Foster cross-disciplinary collaborations, including in silico modelling e.g. digital twins Enhance industry engagement and translational research impact. The project aims to convert sugarcane-derived feedstocks into high-value polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), offering scalable, low-carbon alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. By integrating advanced strain engineering with rigorous bioprocess optimisation, the program seeks to deliver high-productivity, seawater-based, and resource-efficient fermentation systems that are economically and environmentally competitive. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will play a central role in translating laboratory-scale advances into robust, scalable processes. Your work will span small-scale screening through to early pilot-scale operation, with a strong emphasis on: High-cell-density and fed-batch cultivation Media and feeding strategy optimisation Process robustness and reproducibility Scale-down and early scale-up modelling Integration of strain performance, sustainability, and techno-economic constraints You will work closely with strain engineers, students, and collaborators in a highly integrated team, where biological design, process performance, and commercial considerations jointly inform development decisions.
