Reporting to the Senior Manager, Privacy, this role supports the responsible and compliant adoption of AI across the organisation. You'll lead and contribute to AI focused Privacy Impact Assessments, embed Privacy by Design and data governance controls across the AI lifecycle, and provide expert advice to project teams, system owners, researchers and business units. Working closely with ICT, Cyber Security, Risk, Legal and Research stakeholders, you'll help ensure privacy risks are proactively identified, mitigated and managed as AI capabilities continue to expand. Key responsibilities Provide specialist advice on privacy risk management for AI, ML and automated decision making initiatives Lead and undertake AI focused Privacy Impact Assessments for new and existing systems and third party environments Embed Privacy by Design and data governance controls across the AI lifecycle Identify, assess and mitigate AI specific privacy risks, including data use, re identification and inference risks Develop guidance, tools and documentation to support the University's privacy governance framework Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to drive privacy compliance and best practice About you Experience in privacy, risk, governance or compliance roles within complex organisations High level understanding of or demonstrated experience in Privacy by Design Strong knowledge of and hands on experience with privacy legislation and regulatory frameworks Demonstrated understanding of AI, data driven technologies or emerging digital solutions Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate legislation into practical guidance Understanding of relevant legislative requirements and practices, including the NSW privacy acts and the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 Sponsorship / work rights for Australia You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this employment to apply. About the area The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) is a joint venture between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia (UWA), established in 2009 and funded through 2030 with $65 million from the WA State Government. ICRAR is a leading institution in radio astronomy and a key Australian contributor to the global SKA project. The Astrophotonics Group within ICRAR develops advanced photonic systems for radio and optical astronomy, with a focus on long-distance transfer of stabilised frequency and timing signals via optical fibre and free-space laser links. About the opportunity Lead a small research team in the area of free-space optical communication, specifically optimised for operations within maritime environments. Coordinating this work with project partner organisations including industry, government, and defence. Conduct technical work across a combination of optomechanics, communications engineering, software development, and atmospheric physics. About you Tertiary qualification in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering or a related field. Experience in one or more of the following: free-space optical engineering; optical communications systems and photonic technologies; mechanical engineering and fabrication; software, programming, simulation, and algorithm development (Python or MATLAB); and optical propagation through the atmosphere, particularly in maritime environments Experience with high-quality supervision of junior staff and HDR students. Project management experience and organisational skills with the demonstrated ability to set priorities and to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently, show initiative, problem solve and work productively as part of a team. Building on past projects, it focuses on designing durable systems, using advanced controls to adapt to wear and tear, and supporting a circular supply chain. With Operations & Maintenance (O&M) making up 30% of costs, INFINITY emphasizes reliability and predictive maintenance to extend service intervals from 2 to 5 years and cut costs by 50%. These innovations aim to overcome barriers to wave energy adoption, making it more practical, cost-effective, and a viable renewable energy source. The project team is composed of leading academic and industry collaborators from: RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Ocean Harvesting Technologies, Politecnico di Torino, The Technical University Denmark etc. This project is funded through the EU’s Clean Energy Transition Partnership with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, and the successful candidate will join a group of around 30 postdoctoral, PhD and other researchers in COER, who work on the development of wave energy technology, with projects funded from various national and international sources.
