Nawroz University

Nawroz University is based in Duhok, a province in the north of the Kurdistan region in Iraq.
It is a private university founded in 2004 by the provincial government’s Syndicate of Economists.
Starting with faculties of economics, computer science, and law and political science in 2004, it added languages and expanded computer science into a full-fledged science department when it attained full university status in 2009. Engineering courses were established in 2013.
Beginning with English, the languages grew with the addition of Kurdish in 2014, translation in 2017, Kurdish studies in 2018 and psychology in 2023. A joint programme with Durham University set up in 2022 and funded by the British Council focusses on Kurdish Studies.
Engineering has developed similarly, with the founding computer engineering degree supplemented by architectural engineering and an English-medium course in civil engineering.
Since 2015 a Legal Clinic has offered free legal advice.

Your personal sphere of influence:

Our dynamic interdisciplinary team at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry offers a position for a PraeDoc in the areas of bioinorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, and chemical biology in an inspiring scientific environment and a pleasant working atmosphere. A main aim of our work is the development of innovative approaches to target the role of transition metals in cancer growth. Strong expertise and state-of-the-art instrumentation for developing novel anticancer drugs are provided by this team.

Contract duration: 3 years with a preliminary limitation of 1,5 years and will automatically be extended to 3 years unless the employer hands in a non-extension declaration after 12 months. An extension up to a total of 4 years is then possible provided the excellent performance of the candidate.

Your future tasks:

    • Original research projects in the area of bioinorganic chemistry mainly focusing on the synthesis and characterization of novel ligands and/or metal complexes for applications in chemical biology and medicinal chemistry. 
    • Synthetic research work will take place in close coordination with experts in molecular biology and cell biology to enable the optimal design of the potential cancer therapeutics. 
    • You will be expected to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months. 
    • You will be actively involved in research, teaching and administration.
    • You will participate in publications, academic articles, presentations.
    • You will take part in teaching duties to the extent specified in the collective agreement.
    • You will supervise bachelor and master students and carry out administrative tasks in teaching or research.

This is part of your personality:

    • You have a diploma or master’s degree in chemistry, preferably with organic or inorganic chemistry qualification. 
    • Experience in the field of synthetic chemistry is required, especially in the multi-step synthesis of biologically active ligand systems and their corresponding metal complexes.
    • Experience in the purification and characterization of small molecules by advanced chromatography techniques (HPLC, LC-MS) and homo/heteronuclear 1D/2D NMR spectroscopy is required.
    • Experience with the coordination chemistry of first-row transition metals is desirable.
    • Experience with mammalian cell cultures and assays of cell viability and cell death is desirable.
    • Basic experience in research methods and academic writing.
    • Attention to detail and ability to work both independently and as part a team. 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Experience in academic teaching (including e-learning) is desirable.
    • As an enthusiastic, hard-working, dedicated person who enjoys working independently as well as being a team player, you will blend into and be a valuable addition to our group.
    • Very good knowledge of English, basic knowledge of German.

Department of Chinese History and Culture 

The Department of Chinese History and Culture is an academic department within the Faculty of Humanities.  Its mission is to offer high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide interdisciplinary training in the study of Chinese history and culture.  Currently, the Department offers PhD and MPhil programmes, a taught-master degree programme, a major degree programme in Chinese History and Culture, two minor degree programmes in Chinese History and Culture and History of Science and Technology in China, respectively, and university-wide general education courses. The Department conducts quality research in topics related to Chinese history and Chinese culture, in a variety of broadly defined areas. The media of instruction are English and Putonghua. The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of Head of Department of Chinese History and Culture. Job Functions

The position calls for a visionary academic leader with responsibilities of ensuring the smooth and successful operation and sustainable development of the Department.  Reporting directly to the Dean of Faculty of Humanities, the appointee will be required to:

(a)    provide effective leadership in the development of long-term strategies and plans of the Department, in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan; and coach and empower subordinates so that they can accomplish planned objectives with world-class standards and in an effective and efficient manner;

(b)    ensure high-quality teaching as well as holistic development of the students, and align the Department’s programmes with the needs of the community;

(c)    facilitate the conduct of innovative and original research of high quality and impact, and promote and develop genuine interdisciplinary / departmental research with the optimal use of research funds;

(d)    provide leadership in technology development and digital humanities to extend the impact of research outcomes of the University to the community;

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a)    a PhD degree in Chinese History and Culture or a relevant discipline, evidence of eminent scholarship and substantial relevant experience in a senior academic position;

(b)    attainment of an academic rank of full professor or above at an internationally recognised university;

(c)    a distinguished international reputation in research and scholarship, and demonstrated international leadership in any one or more of the specialist areas of Chinese Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, Chinese Religion and Chinese Art;

(d)    a strong record in attracting competitive or/and interdisciplinary research funding;

(e)    a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching;

(f)     a global perspective, proven qualities of academic leadership and substantial administration / management experience, as well as demonstrated ability of building up a strong team of faculty members with different research and cultural backgrounds;

(g)    effective interpersonal communication skills and resources management skills, and excellent adaptability to changes and challenges; 

(h)    good knowledge of the higher education environment in the local and global context; and 

(i)     a high standard of personal integrity.

Experience in fund-raising will be an additional advantage.
